When I first came out, homosexual acts were illegal, Anita Bryant was trying to save the children, and the idea of being able to marry our partner was a distant dream.
Now, as I'm doing my tax returns, checking the "What's New" section, I see we've succeeded in a way that was not in my fantasy of gay liberation: same-sex couples who legally married must file as married even if currently living in a state that doesn't recognize the marriage. Filing separately (not jointly) will result in the same "marriage penalty" mixed-sex couples have been subject to.
Still, it feels like progress.
