Ever catch a cough or sore throat after hooking up?

I'm not talking std's just a sore throat or cough.

My first hookup and I get a sore throat....fuck that shit lol

It's not that uncommon since you possibly introduce a whole lot of new and to your body unknown bacteria to your body ;)

The same thing happens when you start a new relationship, it seems.

Depends on what you consider "hooking up".

If we're talking kissing and making out, then it's not uncommon.

If we're talking blowjobs, then you might want to have a throat swab done if it persists more than a couple of days. And now that you're sexually active, STD testing is part of the deal.

Since I don't feel like creating a new thread, and i'm curious about this, i'll just ask here:

Are there any STDs that can cause a sore throat and/or coated tongue within a couple of weeks? I knew a guy who got this after his first hook-up, and he was FREAKING out and kept telling me to Google it because he couldn't get to a hospital without outing himself to his family.

It just kinda stuck with me, because I never found what to tell the guy to get checked for. Herpes? Epstein-Barr? HIV?? \(o_O)/

eppstein barr certainly, although I believe it does not count as an STD. but as far as i know herpes, gonorrhea and probably also hpv can resist in the the throat. not sure if anything like that would give you a sore throat though.

I learned to be very careful who you kiss(even just on the lips) before getting to know him.
A man may look and act like a total Top but he could have just rimmed (or even felched) someone out or sucked a dick that had just pulled out of his ass (or someone else's ass) and you never know it until a day or more later when you end up having to go on antibiotics.
A bottom runs the risk of sucking a cock that had just fucked ass and some bottoms do suck clean a dick that just fucked them as well as felch.

Yeah, he was a college student. I've spoken to a few gay high school and college kids who got Epstein-Barr ("The Kissing Disease") from a hook-up, and were completely devastated; the symptoms are said to be identical to early HIV infection.

I really wish confidential STD testing could be a part of sexual education in public schools, or available on campus or something.

Well, that's kinda why I like to talk a guy into showering with me before we hook up; It's a completely dignified, hot form of foreplay that's better than telling the guy something like "Parts of you are dirty and smelly. Go wash."

Two best case scenarios: He'll either require no convincing to shower with you, OR he won't be a freak, and you'll actually know him and know where he's been before he was with you. :p

Well as you may know Karabulut, I've become a bit of a health freak, and as soon as I felt symptoms 3 days after the encounter,I got worried,so yesterday while at school I visited the health office, and told them my symptoms, and they checked my throat. After doing so, the Doc said it was a sore throat with a slight case of tonsillitis and he prescribed me some antibiotics. I did blow the guy,and he did the same to me, but of course I didn't say this to the Doc, but I did tell him I had hooked up.

But yea, it just seems like a drag for people who like "hooking up" this is just a throat infection I got,and I don't think I wanna just "hookup" anymore.

In your age group, both chlamydia and gonorrhea are fairly common (probably chlamydia more so because a guy can have it in their urethra or prostate and not have symptoms).

Fortunately, both are curable with antibiotics.

Just FYI- so that you keep this in mind in the future... it's not uncommon when you start dating someone and start kissing and spending time together to find that you get an upper respiratory infection or tonsillitis. Each person has a slightly different set of natural bacteria in their mouth and on their body. So, it's not unusual when exposed to a new person to find that you get sick shortly afterward until your body develops immunity to the new person's germs.

The same type of phenomenon can happen when you travel and are exposed to a new group of people, food and water in a new place.

Epstein Barr virus (EBV) gets a bad rap as the "kissing disease". The truth is that most people contract EBV in childhood through casual contact. And most people who contract EBV have what they would think is "a cold" and don't realize that it's EBV. Unfortunately, there is a percentage of people who get very sick from it (mononucleosis) and those people get labeled as having the "kissing diease" when it fact they may have contracted it from drinking after someone, being exposed to a child with "a cold" or from otherwise casual contact.

I figure that's why humans evolved to stick their tongue in each other's mouths before breeding; It's a genetic immune/antibody thing we pass down to future generations.

I always read/was told that it's only transmitted through saliva, and that's why it's so common with teenagers; it's when they begin having their first kisses, becoming sexually active etc. I know it stays dormant in your neck lymph nodes, and you remain potentially infectious for the rest of your life. If you have it and someone kisses you who's never gotten it, there's a good chance they'll get it.

The virus is carried in saliva. But humans spread more saliva through handshakes, sneeze and coughs than through kissing.

Next time you see someone sneeze or cough, watch and you'll see that most people sneeze/cough into their hands- or worse, don't cover their mouth at all.

So its a fairly normal thing to happen then? This doesn't mean I have a weak immune system and more vulnerable to std's?

It's normal. Not everything that we catch from one another is an STD- sometimes it is really just a cold or a convential infection.

And it may not even be connected to the hookup. This time of year, we see lots of colds- it's the end of the semester, everyone is stressed out and there's a lot of late nights and cramming for exams going on.

If it doesn't clear up in a few days or if you start running a fever, you can go to the doctor. He may want to test for strep throat. But usually the antibiotics will clear it up though.

I wouldn't even start taking antibiotics for that. Your body should be able to handle something like that on it's own within a week...

well lets see the hookup was last saturday (one week today) I didn't get symptoms till tuesday, and didn't see a Doc or start taking any meds till thursday. I only went to the Doctod, cause I don't like being sick, and well, cause of the hookup. It honestly does make sense now though. It was my very first time engaging in sexual activity with someone I barely knew, and it was nerve wracking, but hey it was an experience, right? ;)

gonorrhea of the oropharanx. pretty common. presents like strep.

Not to mention that prescription antibiotics are only effective on bacteria and not viruses, anyway.

Yep, sure did. But my immune system is in very good shape. Cleared it in a day. I fully knew the risk when I took it.
