Back in March, I went with my family to visit some relatives in California. Over there, some family members told us there's this fortune teller that's really really good. Mind you I'm an atheist and has never believed in any of that crap.

Anyway, I was bored and agreed to go meet the fortune teller.

The guy did not charge me. It was free.

I know all about cold reading and all that stuff. So I swear to God I did not say anything, nod, or anything else that gave anything away.

The fortune teller said I had 2 big things I need to pay attention to. Love and business. Ok that was general enough. He said for the foreseeable future I won't be happy with my love life.

Business side, everything I do this year will be a bust. Whatever plans I got. They will all flop. His advice to me was to wait it out. Next year will be better.

This year hasn't been catastrophic. I left the operating part of the rental business alone so that is supporting us. But every effing plan I got for expansion and whatnot has turned into a colossal failure. Between my love life and business life, I'm ready to jump off a bridge.

Actually will someone please come and shoot me in the head? I'm ready to go.

Am I crazy or that free fortune teller was spot on? I tried to tip him but he refused.

A dog can tell a lot about you without being able to understand a word you say. Somehow they can sense your mood better than you can sense it yourself.
A fortune teller works the same way. You may think your poker face gives nothing away but the clairvoyant is somehow picking up some kind of a signal. He works out that you are expecting bad news so that is what you get. Some tellers tell you anything you want to hear, this one tells you what you thought you would hear. Either way it is not the future, the future is in your own hands.

Calendar year or year from when you saw him?

At least he gave you room for some optimism...which is what every clever teller should do.

That could apply to just about anybody.

In telling you it would be a bad year for business, he made you create your own self-fulfilling prophecy.

If someone told you that the number 57 was hugely significant in your life, you would end up seeing that number everywhere.

I also suspect that they are able to present themselves in such a way that it commands a level (however small) of trust, expertise or even mystery. This makes your interpretation of both them and their words extremely malleable.

It is like a horoscope. You see things that fit into your life.

We see what you did there.....:D

LOL I didn't think anyone would notice. I was chuckling to myself as I typed that.

In this case it turned out there was a reason the fortune teller knew so much about her...

The fortune queen of New Orleans
Was brushing her cat in her black limousine
On the backseat were scratches from
The marks of men, her fortune she had won
Couldn't see through the tinted glass
She said, "Home, James" and he hit the gas
I followed her to some darkened room
She took my money, she said, "I'll be with you soon"
Dark lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one
Danced to her gypsy music 'til her brew was done
Dark lady played black magic 'til the clock struck on the 12
She told me more about me than I knew myself
She dealt two cards, a queen and a three
And mumbled some words that were so strange to me
And then she turned up a two-eyed jack
My eyes saw red but the card still stayed black
She said, "The man you love is secretly true
To someone else who is very close to you
My advice is that you leave this place
Never come back and forget you ever saw my face"
Dark lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one
Danced to her gypsy music 'til her brew was done
Dark lady played black magic 'til the clock struck on the twelve
She told me more about me than I knew myself
So, I ran home and crawled in my bed
I couldn't sleep because of all the things she said
Then I remembered her strange perfume
And how I smelled, it was in my own room
And so, I sneaked back and caught her with my man
Laughing and kissing 'til they saw the gun in my hand
The next thing I knew they were dead on the floor
Dark lady would never turn a card up anymore
Dark lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one
Danced to her gypsy music 'til her brew was done
Dark lady played black magic 'til the clock struck on the 12
