Does anyone have recommendations on brand/models of Terabyte Capacity external hard drives? The prices have really dropped.

We don't have cable, so we've invested in videos over the years (probably 500-1000+ videos, total). I've got software to burn copies to my HDD, so we can start to catalog and find them without searching through all of the various plastic storage containers we have them in when we want to watch one.

I'm not so concerned about speed 5400 vs 7200rpm, as I am overall quality and durability and quietness - as long as drive plays movies at the proper recall, that's really all I care about.

I've seen the New Egg ads for <$90 after rebate, but I thought I'd read something about noisiness on one of these threads.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Preium or Ultra, depending on which laptop we plug into it - at least till 7 comes out.

I have a Mac mini connected to my plasma TV, and my 400+ DVD collection is now sitting on 2 x 1.5TB drives (with plenty of room to spare).

I have used LaCie external drives for years without any significant problems, but my two drives mentioned above are Seagate 1.5TB SATA drives (5 year warranty) placed in Astone USB2/eSATA enclosures (2 year warranty). Each drive and case cost me about $190 Australian, prob about $150 US.

I'm only using the USB interface, but there's still plenty of speed to read 2 films from the drive simultaneously (I can watch a movie on my laptop wirelessly while someone else watches one on the plasma).
 
I think all 3 1/2" externals are 7200 RPM. If you are looking at seagate make sure from seagates site that the run isnt one of the ones that were faulty. I had one. Lasted 4 months. Guess what collection was on it ;)
I would be more concerned that the enclosure was a good one with a quiet fan because heat is the #1 killer of externals.
 
Thanks for the info - I don't have a lot of experience with researching externals, enclosures.
 
Dell had a promo on Western Digital this past weekend with purchase of a pc. 1TB Units.

I have a 250GB Iomega portable.
 
Iomega and LaCie aren't hard drive manufacturers. They buy them from Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi or Toshiba (or was it Fujitsu?), rebrand them and put them into their cases.
 
What I have learned about buying any sort of external HDD is wait for the specials to come on. You can buy a 1TB Seagate for about $85+tax at bestbuy this week in my area. I swear by Western Digital though.
