BP is not good for one's skin in fact it's toxic. Pure BP is highly flammable, explosive, toxic, and a possible tumor promoter and may act as a mutagen. BP removes the top layer of skin, which causes photosensitivity, so use a mineral based non toxic SPF if you use BP.
Ummm thats why it available in different percentages up to 20% acutally in a variety of different bases. Tho i had to compound the 20% and it was for a dude's back. Not to mention one of the reasons people use BPO is because it does remove the top layer of your skin. For people with acne this is a good thing. It helps to loosen up the plugs of deadskin that may be clogging pores and helping to exacerbate their acne. While im not a huge fan of BPO in higher concentrations, i do like the 2.5% urea base products as well as the newer NeobenzMicro. And anything can be toxic, water can be toxic in the right amount. Its all about moderation.
I find a lot of people are turned off by the sulfur products due to the smell. Plexion cleansing cloths anyone? a friend had a recently used one in his trash can and with out thinking ( i filled the rx a few days before) i exclaimed " Do you have a sewer leak, wtf dude?" Sulfur based products can also be uber irritating for some people not to mention alot of people are allergic to them . If you can get over the horrid smell they do work.
I usually recommend a combination of products. I like to maximize bang for the buck when helping my acne riddled teen age patients. I usually recommend a glycolic cleanser and AquaGlycolic Toner every day. The toner is really great espically for people who have non-inflamatory acne. Its gentle yet super effective and it doesnt have a lot of other shit ingrediants to piss off your skin. The next product i have them use is a serum of some sort that contains 2% Sal. Acid. Most people hate sunscreen so i've given up that battle. If they ask for one i'll recommend one. I really like La-roche Posay's acne products. They arent that expensive and the serum and moisturizer are both really nice.
The lines that in my opinion clear up peoples skin and help keep it clear are Glytone, AquaGlycolic and M.D. Forte. Glytone has a great acne set that uses Sal. Acid. Glycolic acid and a very mild BPO. It is a little pricey but its good stuff.
It sounds like you're looking more for over the counter products as you said you've been using aveada. Something to tuck in the back of your mind is that acne is sneaky, it will "get use to" the products you're using and you may need to switch it up. I find it helpful to have 2 or 3 cleansers, 2 or 3 toners, 2 or 3 serums, 2 or 3 moisturizers that i like and that work for me, and when one seems to stop works, i switch to one of the others.
Also everyone's skin is a little different. Example, I can not use a gentle non-soap cleanser like Cerave or Cetaphil. They just dont cut it for my skin, if i use those instead of a Glycolic cleanser i get a face full of blackheads. My ex however made the mistake of using my Glytone Level 3 cleanser....and it wasnt pretty. He has to use Cerave or cetaphil or his skin gets irritated and breaks out.
Its all about trial and error till you find what works for you. I'd rather start slow, and mild with products and then adjust accordingly rather than pulling out a shotgun and nuking your face. You wont be happy if you have clear but red and pissed off looking skin.
best of luck!
