Hi all
I don't know if anyone remembers me
You guys probably don't so here's a brief
I'm 25 closeted gay living in Jordan, a highly gay intolerant country. I came out to mother six years ago and she made me see a psychologist to "convert me" and after three months of therapy I told her that I am straight just to get out of that situation
Now I'm trying my best to get out of this country because I want to be myself and to love someone and be loved back I am having no luck what so ever I'm an engineer with a very good career path and very good position but life is hell to always be having crushes and being tortured by loving my best friends.
Can anyone give me advice on where can I apply for jobs in countries that will hire a Jordanian citizen and be a tolerant country I'm honestly fed up with my life here.

That depends on your skills. Your best bet is going the university/research route, and after a few years, explore the process of using those skills to apply for a position in a company that may sponsor your visa/citizenship status. This advice is for USA. Not sure about other places as immigration laws are different every.


I have a friend who came here from Turkey on some type of visa and worked in a hotel staff for several months, but eventually got married to an american so he had less immigration issues to deal with. But your best bet is academia or being highly skilled.

There's two ways out of situations like this:

• Get a job with an international company and transfer to a job in another more gay-friendly country.
• Emigrate to a country for an advanced degree and start networking or looking for an internship the minute you start your program.

Unemployment rate in Jordan is high and there are lots of other guys with degrees in your situation, so your chances of finding a job inside Jordan may not be good. Unfortunately, most of the Arabic-speaking countries are not going to be more tolerant of your sexuality and unless you speak multiple languages or you have a particular skill that is hard to find, you're going to have to emigrate to western Europe, Australia or the United States to find both a job and a more tolerant atmosphere.

I know a Lebanese gay man who came to the US to study engineering and was hired by a large corporation. His visas have been temporary, but his latest has been renewed for three years.

I'm a manager at my current company and I have very good experience in analytics and market research
I might consider higher education but I have limited resources (financially) and I'm not sure about my chances in getting a scholarship

Much clearer. Do you work for a multinational? If so, many have leadership training programs for middle managers that you can apply for which should give you a global experience, after which you can decide to live in a different country. See if something like that is available to you.

Thanks for replying and showing interest actually no I work for a national company which is well known to all companies in the Arabic countries and I can easily find a job in the gulf but that's even less tolerant! I applied to many multinational companies and got to the final interview a couple of times but for some reason was not chosen.I think European companies prefer to hire someone who has a European nationality or at least has residency there.
I'm really desperate and would appreciate any advice or help

Sharpen your interview skills. Ask a friend or colleague to do a mock interview and continue to practice your specific responses. If you are in a final round and dont get an offer, it is usually because somehow your experiences were not communicated effectively enough, or you it wasn't clear what impact you will make in the role you are interviewing for. Also, in those interviews, you should be sure to express that you are unattached and completely mobile to make it clear to them that you will not be bringing along family or kids. Employers are not supposed to discriminate for jobs based on this, but it happens.

I have a good friend that was able to move to austalia from columbia on assylum because Columbia is very homophobic. he has a job here in australia and is very happy

I actually considered seeking asylum but I don't think they consider Jordan as "very homophobic" because there are some gay communities but it's not easy there's the family and childhood friends.
Basically my entire life i have been pretending to be someone I'm not!

You should be more specific about your skill set, which countries you would be looking to move to, timeline for when you might want it to happen, and maybe we can have more specific information on avenues to get there.

Many companies in Silicon Valley hire people from all over the world. And they aren't just looking for computer software engineers. They have positions for all sorts of work. You could check out some of the websites for employment and see what positions they have available. They may even have ideas of how and what is needed to emigrate. Take a look and see and good luck.

Just remember if you visit a country you can not just go get a job. The Visa you will get for the trip is a tourist one.. Even if some place said you can work for us once found out you will be removed it will be harder in the future to come back for anything, Being Gay and having been to Bahrain, Kuwait and the worst shit hole Saudi Arabia I am so sorry for you. Get a good education if you can and with a degree and some experience you can look on line for work elsewhere

Big data is a trend many large companies are hiring for to prepare for its monetization and use in the near future. I would look at consulting firms who specifically offer this, and brush up on your data analytics and big data knowledge and skill set (I would assume this involves intermediate to advanced knowledge of statistics and basic computer science) to interpret it for productivity gains.

You might also invest in an online class on lean six to throw that under the belt as well, but you will definitely need to be able to interpret big data.

1. Get your resume air tight
2. Network with individuals at these companies. You might also inquire about foreign consulting firms currently doing work for your current employer or firms that your firm does work for overseas. Easy way to network.
3. PRACTICE INTERVIEWS with EXPERIENCE BASED ANSWERS
4. Apply...You should be applying to 4-5 postings every week.
