File types have disappeared in Folder Options. I cannot open .doc and .rtf files......no file association
Would someone PLEASE tell me exactly what I should be doing?
I go to folder options, click new, type the extension, go Advanced and type what for .doc and .rtf?
Thanks,
LARRY

try and see if you can right click on your .doc file and select "open with" then "choose program" then hopefully select "Microsoft Office Word" and make sure the box labeled "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked. then click "ok"

if that works try the same thing with the .rtf file but select the progam that you normally use to open those instead of MS word (unless you use word to open it).

Thanks, Mike.
Right click, "open with" (WordPad...don't have Office) works for .rtf, but not for .doc.
Where do I find "
always use the selected program to open this kind of file" or is that only available with MS Word?

how were you opening .doc files before? they are MS word file format so you shouldn't have been able to open them with word pad?

i'll attach a couple pictures to help you out.

Mike,
Thanks for latest reply.
Frankly, I don't remember what opened the .doc files in the past...I only know they opened. (The .doc files are AVERY templates.)
The only "word" programs I have are:
WordPad
Notepad
MS Works 4.0
None of these will open the .doc files. NONE of the "open with...choose program" options work.

Downloaded OpenOffice. All RTF documents now open with that program...which is fine. However, still nothing with .doc. It opens a bunch of squares and symbols........as was the case when I tried to open with WordPad.

Light bulb moment: how can I find out if my .doc files are corrupted?

Off-topic, but curious: what's up with my "nickname'...(under 300148 on left)???

LARRY

You could try checking if your .doc files are corrupted by going to zamzar - free online file conversion. Send it a file and see if it converts it ok to .txt - if so , I assume they are ok

Thanks, atkiboy.
Tried the zamzar link and the .doc files came back as blank pages......corrupted, I guess. Fortunately, I haven't a lot of these type files.
They are (were) Avery templates for address labels, something I can easily replace.
:-)
