Motherboard: Asus M4A785T-M
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 3.0 gzh (unlocked to X4)
Memory: Corsair 4 gig
Hard Drive: Seagate 1 TB SATA barricuda (which had a SMART failure after 16 days, so I'm running an old hard drive Hitachi 500 GB).
OS: Dual booting Windows 7 64-bit ultimate and PCLinux2010 (think i like 2007 better). ;)
Video: onboard ATI Radeon HD 4200

Windows experience score 4.1 (lowest score is graphics card, next lowest score is 5.8 which is the hard drive).

DVD drive i recycled from my last computer (PLEXTOR DVDR PX-740A). I'm currently stuck waiting for seagate to replace the hard drive. total cost including case and 550 watt power supply was $397 dollars. (failed hard drive was $50, so everything that i'm actually running at the moment cost $347).

Re: Finally build a new computer!

You know, I've been reading a lot lately about Seagate failures. Sad, really. I used to love their drives.

But mazel tov on the new box!

Re: Finally build a new computer!

you clock to 3.0 Gzh right??? what the original clock?

it's a three core processor clocked at 3.0 ghz (as purchased). the motherboard has a core unlock feature in the BIOS so all i did was turn on the 4th core. it's still clocked at 3.0 ghz I have not overclock at all.

thanks on the congrats. my other machine was a Pentium 4 3.0 ghz extreme edition that i built back in 2003. :)

this was the third seagate drive i've ever had fail. years ago i swore i'd never buy another seagate, but this was on sale and i thought oh that was years ago that they were crap, maybe they are better now. i was soooo mistaken. but i can't take it back i was past my 15 day return. so all i can do is get a replacement. :(

Re: Finally build a new computer!

Strange, too. I used seagate's barracuda scsi drives for years. Those things were tanks. I have some that are 5-10 years old that are still churning along.

Re: Finally build a new computer!

very nice, I hope to build a new super-computer sometime soon. Looking very strongly at moving away from my usual AMD processor to get an intel i7. They look pretty good.

only part of the build I didn't care for was the onboard video card :( As soon as i see onboard i cringe, but I'm sure its more than enough for what you use it for (I assume you don't video game heavily).

Very nice build though! I love it when a computer finally comes together and you first boot it up.

Re: Finally build a new computer!

i do play a lot of games. I'm playing Starcraft II now and have most of the settings at high. It lags a bit if i have more than 3 computer players. i went with AMD because i wanted to be able to upgrade to a core 6 down the road. you can't with intel. also i went with amd because the asus board supported unlocking the 4th core :) that was exciting. so i got a quad core for the price of a tri core and so far it's stable.

Mike:

6 cores is going to be nice. :-D If you don't mind the integrated graphics you have now, I'd say hold off a little till the 5k series amd cards come down in a price, and then pick up 1 of them. :)

How is the star craft beta?

i like the beta, but the 3d thing is a waste because when you zoom in that far to see 3d you only see a very small portion of the screen at a time.

i intended to buy a separate graphics card, but prices were not that great on the ones i was looking at so i thought i'd wait a bit. :)

nice then! I have nothing against AMD cpus, I love them, and it seems you got a great deal, I just really want to try the i7, or by the time I build a computer, better. Best way to compare is to experience.
