Just called my mother and told her that I'm gay. As I predicted, she reassured me that she loves me. Oddly, she said that she was surprised, though I'm not sure that I believe her.

It's kind of odd. I knew that there wasn't going to be a horrible fallout, but after I decided that I would tell her, it took hours to bring myself to pick up the phone (I would have rather done it in person, but I don't get home much). My only real concern is that she might be worried about me, but hid the fact to make sure I felt okay. I would have expected her to ask some questions, but all she said was to make sure that I stayed safe and we continued to chat about the sort of things we normally chat about.

I'm not certain why I decided to tell her. I haven't really been hiding anything because I've never had a boyfriend anyway. I'm glad I did it though. I just hope she doesn't worry too much.

You made the right choice! As time goes by, everything tends to settle down.

You have a loving mother and I am glad to hear that she informed you to stay safe :)

Call her tomorrow, and ask if she's cool with everything, and if she has any questions. And thank her for being a kick-ass mom.

can you call my mom and tell her that her only son is gay?

Congratulations.

Now start working on that boyfriend thing. :)

So she called me today and she's going to visit next weekend so we can chat for a bit. I'm glad about this because I thought it was strange that she didn't have any questions.

She made it clear that regardless of any questions, she knows that I'm the same person I've always been.

I have an awesome mom.

Too fucking bad. What are you, a baby-making machine?

No, you're a human being.

Stand up for yourself.

You do have an awesome mother. In fact, tell her about you chatting with other gay men online and about how all of them are proud of not only here son, but of her too.

It's not always that easy for some of us, Lube. It took me years to pluck up the courage. Strict Catholic mother, small town attitudes and a lack of self confidence combined to keep me closeted from my family for many years. Coming out to my mother was the hearest thing I've ever done in my life and in doing so, it also came close to destroying her. So ease up, huh?

Axalon is very lucky to have a Mum like this, not all of us are in that fortunate situation.

Oh, believe me, I've been there. I was in my 40's when I came out.

It's just that you have to get to the point where you can tell everyone to just stuff it--that's when you're comfortable being yourself, and when you're best able to come out. That's all.
