Hey Everyone,

I have seen a few posts on here about guys experiencing problems from fissures. About 8 months ago I developed a fissure and it has come and gone over the months and its constantly annoying. It was not brought on by anal sex (I usually top and hadn't bottomed for a long time before I developed this fissure). I went to the Dr. who checked it out and said he didn't see anything but he felt a slight thickening in the area where i usually feel a sharp pain and then tearing when I go to the bathroom (on occasion). Once it tears, I am pretty much pain free for a while because it sort of relieved the pressure or the tightness down there. Once it heals though, the tightness builds again until the point of another rip. I am taking fiber, and drinking tons of water and using wet wipes after going to the bathroom.

The main reason I am writing this post is to ask about the concept of a butt plug. I was wondering if purchasing a small plug and using it for a little bit each day might help the fissure to heal a little more "openly" and help me become a little less tight down there.

Does this sound crazy or does anyone have any experience with trying something like this.

Any advice is appreciated!

If this is recurrent and you've tried self-management (fiber, etc), then it's time you went to see a colorectal surgeon. It's time that you got a definitive diagnosis and that will probably require both an in-office exam and perhaps a colonoscopy. Once you have a diagnosis, the appropriate treatment will be clearer.

The butt plug would not be a good idea until it's clear what is going on.

Well that was the doctor is was referring to. It was a colorectal surgeon and he said he saw nothing but felt a thickening where he believes a fissure had been.

Did he just do an external exam or did he insert a scope into your rectum and take a look?

He inserted a finger and a scope...he told me that it must not be a severe fissure because if I have been having the problem for 8 months it wouldn't come and go all the time. He said if it was severe he would have been able to see it. This is why I was wondering about the plug just to sort of "loosen" up the ring down there so the stretching once or twice a day when I go to the bathroom wouldn't be so tight.

Fiber like a psyllium supplement, a stool softner, lots of veggies, stay away from big meat meals and dairy, lots of water, a magnesium oxide supplement (will help muscles lining colo-rectal tract to relax), warm baths. It takes a while to get better, but it will. It's kind of like a canker-sore in that regard.

However you should have someone look at it. Fissures have a nasty way of developing into fistulas and abscesses.

A physician doing an exam of your anus with a visualization and with a scope would see a fissure. It is possible for fissures to be internal but a finger and a scope would have found an internal fissure. Sometimes when they heal, they aren't as easy to see but a thorough exam would show a fissure that was open or had recently healed, especially since the overwhelming number of fissures are on the area next to the tailbone.

The way to think of an anal fissure is to think of one of those cracks in your lips on the corner of your mouth- the kind that you sometimes get during the winter when your lips get chapped and dry. So, what you're asking is equivalent to whether stretching your lips wider (for example, when eating a hot dog) them would help avoid cracks in the corner of your mouth. The answer is "No" - whether it's a crack in your lips or a crack in your anus.

The way to avoid fissures is to avoid stretching the area so that it doesn't cause a "split" in the anus. With the exception of childbirth in women, the majority of fissures are caused by trauma from taking a dump- especially with constipation or large hard stools.

But based upon the physician's exam, it doesn't sound like your issue is a fissure. You may want to consider a second opinion just to be sure but it sounds like you've got something else going on if you're still having issues.
