So, recently I started to go to the gym and I have been noticing that I have a somewhat steady stream of flatulence since starting my exercise regime. I'm just wondering if this is normal and if anyone else has experienced it...

It's normal. The gas has probably been stored in you for years in what are known as gas pockets, and as you exercise you are moving parts of your body you haven't before, and it's pressing on those gas pockets to release them. Don't be alarmed, any smells you smell could be from things you ate a long time ago that are working their way out. Keep exercising--it's good for you to get all that stale , unhealthy air out.

Also once you finish exercising, you should try a yoga move to help let more gas pass. You should do this in the lockerroom as it's likely you will pass a lot of gas. Stand with your legs slightly apart. Fold your arms together so your elbows meet over the middle of your abdomen. Bend way over, as far as you can, while pushing your ass into the air while pushing in on your stomach and slightly bearing down.

I would not recommend that move if you are currently experiencing diarrhea. Also what type of BMS are you making and how often? If your stools are hard and desiccated, that would explain the gas pockets. When you exercise the BM moves in your colon enough to let the air rip around it probably.

Overall, I wouldn't worry. Good luck and good job!

Anything to back this up? Because it smells like bullshit. And not from a gas pocket ..

If you're taking supplements, they may be responsible for the increased gas.

Physical activity does increase motility in the colon, so it would not be unusual to have gas or a bowel movement after you have been exercising.

What's your diet like?

I've been slowly adjusting my diet from heavily processed foods (Microwave dinners, fast food, pizza, etc) to healthy stuff (salads, tuna, chicken, less red meat, etc). I try to drink as much fluids (be it water, milk, teas) as possible in a day.

It's the same without supplements. Physical activity does seem to help with peristalsis.

It's just that guys who take supplements with protein/milk or that contain caffeine often find that they have a change in bowel habits.
