That does seem to be taking a very long time. In the screen shot, where it says "backing up" are the file names changing or is it stuck on that one file? Either way, something seems wrong. I would pause the backup and see if it gives you the option to cancel. If it does, cancel. If it dosen't, I would try to close out the backup, if it dosen't allow you to stop I would shut done the computer, then re-boot, find the new drive in the list of hard drives, re-format it and start the back up again. If you have the same problem I would contact Seagate support or user forums and see if anyone else has had a similar problem using that drive with a similar set up as yours.

I have owned both Seagate and Western Digital hard drives and have had problems with both. One Segate did not play nice with a Dell that I had but worked fine with two other set ups and the Western Digital worked with the Dell but wasn't even detected by a home built system.

Keep us posted on how it's going.

Unfortunately, often times when one uses the back up feature, it backs up EVERYTHING. I just use my external(s) for files I can't replace (pictures, videos,...). I never back up the software that can be easily re-installed. If your computer is backing up EVERYTHING, it could take a while.

Also might depend on the default settings it has, and how often it backs up. If you have it set to do it daily it might get bogged down trying to re-copy more then it has time for.

Also if you've got GB/TB of porn (like I do) it could take forever to copy over.

I have a 200GB internal harddrive and it takes at most 4 hours to do a full backup. I would not be surprised if there are some corrupted sectors that crashed the backup.

The fact that you need to get a third-party program to do a backup says a lot about the quality of either the HD or the OS you are using. I have Win7ulti and a WD 2TB external and I have never had a problem with backups except when I had to delete old backups from taking up too much space.

My suggestion:

1. Disk Cleanup, Disk Check, and Disk Defrag your main HDD - this should correct the bad sectors, clean out the gunk and other stuff too. Note, this will take a few hours...

2. Create a folder on the External HDD, labeling it as "NEW Backup" or something. Then, start backing up your system again, but into the folder you just created.

That should do it.

Download hdtune and take a look at the smart values. The drive may be already failing.

The USB controller may be the bottle neck. You can try and remove the drive and connect it directly to your motherboard and see if transfer rates improve.

What's the total size of the files you want to backup? I had to backup 2TB already twice to another harddrive and it took about a day each time...

If you don't have hi-speed USB 2.0 ports or USB 3, it will take that long. You know you don't have high speed ports when windows gives you a balloon stating "This device can perform faster"

Next problem,

These apps downloaded 10 days ago are in limbo and have never installed onto Ipod Touch.
Any ideas. Im powering down because someone will ask and I have not tried that
(I was downloading some silly apps)

oh, i think you need to shut down the power completely, then turn on again after 10 seconds ...
Power off completely (not the standby off mode)

I can't help with the WMP errors. Because of continued problems with WMP, I switched to VLC years ago and haven't had any problems since.

YOu can keep the MP4 format. They'll play in VLC and you don't have do install any codecs or anything. I also like VLC remote for my android phone - I'm lazy.

Ugh you still use WMP? I prefer realplayer with some codecs (especially for anime).

Honestly, I think your computer is in desperate need of an upgrade. I'm sure your specs would tell that story.

Man, there's something wrong. I can move 2tb of data over my network in about 7-8 hours. Hell, it would only take about 10-12 hours for me to backup 2tb to tape even with verify.

M10000, did you check both HDs with a specific program to find read/write errors? Be it the Windows checkdisk or something else.
