No, it's a quotation on coveting. In this case money, but feel free to substitute it for power or other types of wealth.

Nice try, but persuit is not a synonym for covet. Persuit is usually an action, whereas to covet is an emotion. It's Want squared.
Tho I dunno that the distinction is usually brought up, since I think most people assume to want is to strive, despite that not being the case.

Stop saying "persuit." That's not even the Canadian for "pursuit." They're a bit teched when it comes to excessive "ou" combinations, so maybe "persout" is acceptable up there, but never "persuit." And not "pirsuit" either, as that just sounds like pervert and hirsute merged or something.
As for the Writ, it is interesting what the Christ said about it. One can easily psychoanalyze several sins that are not about materialism, but it seems apt that Jesus skipped past the details and spoke to the main. Many of the character weaknesses that typify humanity are aspects of ego and failure to find fulfillment because self is not developed well. But, the most harmful seem to be more about power, so they are indeed fueled as adults by the drive to get mammon and thereby power.
It should be noteworthy that adultery, the most commonly decried sexual sin of the time, got a walk on this basis, as it is rarely about the pursuit of mammon, and certainly would not have been back in the day in which a woman would not have been able to "marry up" via affairs. Sorry, but the men seemed to have co-opted the system long before Judaism.
And bullying, the most blatant form of not loving one's neighbor, was just picking on the weak. There didn't have to be lunch money involved at the yeshiva in the year 6 AD, etc.

There is a lot of range in the interpretation of "mammon" by the early scholars. One outlier is anything in which one trusts. But, Jesus was fairly consistent in his criticism of any reliance on trusting what one has stored up, and clearly saw self-sufficiency as a vice when it reached the level of certainty, presumption, or arrogance. His parables reinforced this message repeatedly.
The modern Church has predictably abandoned all but lip service to this dogma in affluent countries, with trust in 401k, in the State, in education, and many other trappings that provide "social security." Usury also proved to be an inconvenient truth.
In similar fashion, trust itself is become passe as churches begin locking the doors out of security concerns and full time armed guards stand vigil during worship services. God has little room left to provide any divine intervention . . . unless the damned gun jams.

It refers to covet money. The bible says that covetousness is idolatry. The 10th commandment tells us not to covet or desire, lust after or want anything that is our neighbors. We can not love our neighbor if we resent him for having what we desire.

28 translations of the verse specify "money" not "power or other types of wealth." Apparently, the word in question is transliterated as philaguria which might be translated as avarice, but comes from a root which literally means "lover of silver."
