Normally don't give shout out to tech products but My harddrive was down to 25 GB of memory. Ran CCleaner (free program) and it left all the stuff I needed intact but cleaned out virtually all of the junk that was taking up space on my compturo.
I'm at 173 GB after using it.

I have used CCleaner for a long time now. (I don't use the registry cleaner portion). After running CCleaner, I have to relog into many sites requiring my username and password (JUB is one one of them) as CCleaner deletes many cookies. So....be sure you know your usernames and passwords before running Ccleaner. Also, save time by emptying your recycle bin before using CCleaner.

If you're not careful this program can really fuck up your computer. I had a friend tell me it fucked up his registry after using it.

^ Agreed. CCleaner may be better than similar "registry cleaner" tools in more clearly displaying what changes it will make and breaking them into categories (instead of those "one-click, don't-think-about-it fix-it" ones that make assumptions), but whenever I run it it's always carefully inspecting all proposed changes and disabling a number of the proposed changes and sticking to more obvious ones (obsolete programs or "orphaned" registry entries, for instance). The irony is the average user might not be expected to know what each finding is and CCleaner's output can be dangerous, but a power user or somebody who's used to installing/uninstalling a lot of software or tuning their machine would recognize some of the issues on sight and be able to act judiciously.

For sheer space reclaiming I would recommend space analysis tools like Windirstat, WizTree or Top 100 Files. You can do your own reclaiming by recognizing obsolete temp files, files you forgot about in several layers of folders, etc.

Didn't use the registry part. I only used it on temp files, cookies etc.

Chip,

On the main CCleaner Cleaner "Windows" tab and the "Applications" tab you can disable the purging of Cookies, Session, Saved Form Info, and Saved Passwords for each of your installed browsers if you so choose.
