Rob Halford, singer of Judas Priest came out in 1998. He was and still is an icon of heavy metal, a genre of music which imo, has by far the most homophobic audience (certainly compared to pop music). I know he hasnt had the mainstream appeal as Ricky, or Ellen or whoever and I dont want to diminish the importance of any celebs public declaration of their sexuality. But in terms of actually CHANGING peoples perception homosexuality I think he does not get enough credit.

I went to a Judas Priest concert last year and it truly was inspiring to see a sold out arena full of men who look like they would never get behind a gay male accept Halford. I dont think he gets enough credit for coming out. I had SEVERAL conversations with metal fans who have actually said things along the lines of "at first when i heard Halford was gay i was like fuck it, im not listening and then i thought about it and realized gay people are people too." Halford deserves major props from the LGBT community, just sayin ..|

I have to kinda agree with you. He really made a few straight men think twice about what they thought gay was. I just wish he didn't start wearing the make-up and fur coats in interviews though.

he doesnt anymore but yeah i wish he would have done without the fur coat in the 1998 interview when he came out. im glad he ditched that look and went back to wearing the classic priest leather gear on stage

You know I kind of think its easier in the music world.
The real bravery is when you are in something that's a hetero bastion.
Coming out as an NFL player for instance..

i think that like football heavy metal is also a hetero bastion of sorts (despite how homoerotic a moshpit might be:))

^ Not sure if Jasun here would agree - he's into heavy metal I gather...

Re: Forget Ricky Martin...the bravest celeb to come out was...

I've noticed that a lot of younger straight guys really support Neil Patrick Harris, as well and don't seem to really mind him being gay at all. Around the time he first came out, I even heard a few straight guys say that they respect him for being able to act so well and for just being honest with himself.

Ricky Martin was just a fucking laughingstock, though. I think we can all agree on that.

p.s Rob Halford reminds me of Buck Angel.

Re: Forget Ricky Martin...the bravest celeb to come out was...

Rob had already made his boatloads of cash long before he came out. The same can be said for most gay male celebrities, with the most recent exclusion being NPH...but who cares, right? He plays a womanizer.

NPH revitalized his career back when he did Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle. He was already famous again and working when he was outed, and went into a huge depression about it for awhile because he was unsure of whether or not it would ruin his career. Surprisingly, it really hasn't.

All MLB and NFL players came out after they retired, i haven't seen anyone coming out while playing in the NBA, NFL , MLB NHL etc.

Rob is a friend of mine and yes.. he's a trail-blazer.

Good for him.

The most embarrassing moment of my life was when I had to tell him that I named my dog after him.

A black and white Shitzu.

Actually Rap/Hip Hop has the most homophobic fans and I doubt that many straights would support an out male Rap Star.

Talent is talent and there were other trailblazers like Elton John and Freddy Mercury. I'm not a big heavy metal guy.

I prefer Morrissey, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, and all the great new wave guys like Robert Smith and Martin Gore who were straight but not afraid to be themselves.

Re: Forget Ricky Martin...the bravest celeb to come out was...

Robert Smith and Martin Gore are straight?

Wow, that would be like finding out Fred Schneider was straight.

Robert Smith has been married since 1988, no children.

Martin Gore is divorced has three kids and is also half African American.

Fred Schneider is flaming and now the B52's are 3/4 gay. 4 out of 5 original members are/were gay.

Re: Forget Ricky Martin...the bravest celeb to come out was...

Why do you think none of them are out? There are many rumors out there that many of them are gay.

There are rumors about every celebrity. Pick a celebrity that isn't already out and there will be a rumor that someone saw them with someone of the same sex or at a gay bar. The fact some of the rumors are true is just a matter of probability.

Re: Forget Ricky Martin...the bravest celeb to come out was...

I never heard of Rob Halford before (not being a metal fan), but it sure sounds like he deserves props.

While I certainly think metal fans have a rep for being homophobic, I think hip-hop is bimodal in that regard. If you're a fan of Eminem, you might have different attitudes than if you're a fan of Salt N Pepa (who donated their time to play at an AIDS Dance-a-Thon many years ago).

I'm pretty sure Jamaican music would give both a run for their money, in terms of having homophobic fans. Jamaica as a country is so homophobic that a friend who grew up there told me that if two women walked down the beach holding hands in the afternoon, they'd both be hacked to death with machetes by sunset; I've read (in the Village Voice, take whatever saltgrainage you think that calls for) that Rastafarians are taught that homosexuals are not actually human and that killing one is a righteous act.

Now, not all Jamaican artists, especially ones who have traveled extensively, are like that. But then you have the reprehensible Buju Banton. Scroll down to the lyrics on that page; a "Batty Bwoy" is, shall we say, an insulting term for a gay man.

But I'm pretty sure that the homophobia of the fans of just about any genre is dwarfed by those of Hatecore. That's a conjecture based on what I know about them; I certainly never listen to such monstrous crap.

Re: Forget Ricky Martin...the bravest celeb to come out was...

For someone to display "courage", they should have something to lose. When Elton John came out in 1974, he was at his absolute peak. For some of these current past-their=prime celebrities to come out takes as much "courage" as a Hollywood liberal coming out for Obama.
