For the past few years everyone in my building has been getting free WiFi through an unsecured linksys router connected to a university in the neighborhood. While I am still able to connect to the router, for the past week I have not been able to connect to the internet. I was wondering if anyone knew what was going on? Could this be a problem with some update to my security (firewall, etc.)

Thanks

Maybe the person's internet was disconnected. You can still access the router and access the network, but when the Internet is disconnected or not working you can't access the Internet at all.

This might be the issue.

Also nice avatar I love Vivian Vance.

the person might

have enabled a mac filter
now route you differently
simply might be offline
block you with a firewall

or, or or ...

Sounds like your free wifi days are over. :-)

Why not pool together with the other "sharers" in your building and share the cost of one connection?

I've actually tried to do that, only nobody seems terribly interested. My internet use at home his fairly limited to checking emails. I offered my next door neighbors $10 to piggy-back on to theirs, only they didn't bite.

It's really nice when you can find someone to do that. I lucked out and my neighbors in the last place I lived at were willing to share. I'll be moving again soon in a large building, and I'm crossing my fingers that I'll find someone willing to share.

Get your own Internet and stop jacking other people's wifi for your own uses. Either that or use dial-up.
