"Transformers" director Michael Bay is reviving the "Friday the 13th" franchise through his low-budget production company.

The remake of the original 1980 horror classic, which turned the villainous Jason into a cultural icon, is being produced for New Line Cinema by Bay's Platinum Dunes banner. Platinum Dunes was also behind the revival of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Hitcher."

In the original "Friday the 13th," the serial killer made only a brief appearance in the final frames and never killed anyone. Jason didn't even don the famous mask until the third movie. The remake, however, will focus on Jason -- who will wear the mask and kill -- and keep the famous setting of Crystal Lake.

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift will write the script. They wrote 2003's "Freddy vs. Jason," the killer's last big-screen appearance. That film grossed more than $82 million domestically.

so it is true then...hollywood HAS officially run out of ideas.

how about taking some of the 50 million it takes to make a trashy movie and put it towards helping people?

Totally agree with that and whoever hire Paris Hilton in a movie should do the same. We already know that it's not gonna make any money and will go directly to DVD. Why not use that money for a good cost.

There are plenty of great ideas in Hollywood. It's just that the people with the $$$ are idiots and are funding stupid projects.

I heared this awhile ago there suppose to remake alot of old movies but hey like I say never judge a movie till you see it and I am a big horror fan so I will be there to see it

What? She killed everyone except the girl that beheaded her. The whole crazy notion to revive her son Jason didn't spring up until after the first movie made enough money to justify a sequel. Mrs. Vorhees was one thing that made the first movie interesting. Because all through the movie nobody ever suspected a woman was the killer.

Anyway, they keep making these cheap remakes because they are, well, cheap to make and it's easy to attract enough people to fill the theater on opening night to make a profit.

OMG the Friday the 13th series were my favourite of all the slasher genres of the 80's.

Up till about part 5...then they became a little to silly... but I so loved Jason X... I know I know I'm going to hell for admitting it but the whole fact that they kinda did a self parody similar to the Scream trilogy. After all it was part 10.

I remember as a kid hearing that they planned on actually doing 13 installments and I wonder if this is going to count as one.

remaking crap

cool might be good then

The original was the scariest movie I have ever seen. I was sixteen and went with my fourteen year old brother. We were finding something to do while my dad was in the hospital for a heart attack. Worst decision ever!!! I literally was almost scared to death, especially when he came out of the water at the end, closing my eyes and shaking in fright. When we got home my littlest brother was in my parents king size bed with my mom. I went downstairs to my room and was so freaked out even to walk around a corner or turn the lights off that I ended up in bed with my mom too(as well as my other brother) LOL

And my dad ended up fine(quadruple bypass) and is still alive today. That same weekend Mt St Helens blew and came over our city(Missoula Montana) turning day to night and dusting the city with ash. Ah those were the days. LOL

I actually liked Ms. Voorhees as the killer. Everyone was expecting a lunatic madman, but she pulled the wool over everyone's eyes. Great job.

Sadly, I'm not in favor of them remaking this. Why can't Hollywood get any good new Horror series going? I honestly think Scream was the last great series we ever had. Really miss those days.

MORE REMAKES? Ok, fair enough if the original was shit house and turn it into something better.

But, Friday the 13th was a hit, why wreak the original if the remake doesn't go so well?

There hasn't been much horror movies lately, and I am a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE fan of horror..

I remember CHILD'S PLAY, oh my god I loved it. Now the newer ones that they have made just completely suck!!

The first 3 child's play movies were amazing, still some of my favorites. Haven't seen many of the Friday the 13th movies, but I really would rather them just make a new horror series. Maybe a pyro who died, went to hell, came back with 'fiery powers' and is harder to kill then Jason?

The original Friday The Thirteenth was my first exposure to one of my great crushes/lust objects, Kevin Bacon! I saw the movie months before Footloose was released theatrically. I can still remember the ambivalence of watching him have sex (in the heavily edited broadcast TV version) and lusting after him only to watch him murdered shortly after. I was always troubled by how the series put eroticism in a context of gory violence. I wonder how this new installment will handle that issue?
