I never thought id see myself reinstalling windows as my main OS, but running the latest version of Mint/Ubuntu has been a pain in the ass.

  • 2 out 3 times the sytem froze at boot (x server issues)
  • poor support for ATI cards in recent versions
  • VLC video playback had the audio skipping all the time
  • Totem video player simply froze and crashed
  • Firefox would often freeze and crash (and the flash plugin didnt work)
  • the system would lag incredibly after being on for only a short while (annoying PC fan always spinnin' away)
  • the inability to find a decent conversion software for FLV videos to put them on my mp3 player
  • the inability to find a decent messenger client that didnt fuck up my contact list by dropping contacts or randomly re-arranging them
  • the systems' inability to properly detect my mp3 player as an mp3 player, and its failure to connect to my cellphone
  • the numerous physical threats i made towards my PC for it's poor performance as of late

The good news is after having installed XP ive been able to download windows versions of the few software applications i loved from linux, OpenOffice and GIMP.

Makes me wonder if im the only who finds linux is actually growing more incompatible with hardware and software this days.

I'm finding myself having some of the issues you mentioned above. My machine is 4 years old, and works extremely well with XP, but Ubuntu always seems to overheat it without breaking a sweat.

It also cannot grab my keyboard at times, which requires a reboot, and makes Firefox go all willy-nilly. Astronomy.com WILL NEVER load, and only causes a complete system lockup. I wouldn't be bothered if I didn't have to cite articles from it for my homework.

None of these problems existed with Hardy. It really seems like they just rushed this release without fully testing it. Here's to hoping that Jaunty Jackalope is better than Intrepid!!!

Naw, the audio only skipped in VLC and not in Totem, but Totem had other problems.

As for mencoder, yeah, i had two frontends for it, and both invariably crashed during pass 2.

My MP3 player is a sony, it was recognized in previous versions of ubuntu but not lately, and when it is recognized, its recognized as a camera.

well i re-arranged my partition table, a 30gig one for XP, a 7gig one with Mint (as a backup in case WGA gets the best of me) and the remaining 120 gigs is an NTFS partition with all my vids/music on it.

even now im reasonably surprised XP has been running for 3days straight no crashes no slowdowns.

Well i would like to have my data accessible in both systems and its not possible with ext3.

fuck that, im having too much fun running the most recent versions of all my favorite software :-)

i have never been able to get versions of ubuntu after 6 to even install. i've also found that knoppix has seemed to gotten worse with each successive update. not sure what's going on, but i feel your pain.

that's fine. Don't forget third party antivirus, firewall, ad-ware and spyware removers, and be careful of those "new screensaver" email attachments ;)
ive been using computers and the internet since 95. I think i know to avoid opening pecular attachments and avoiding shady websites. im running AVG antivirus, as for spyware removers and all that, havent yet downloaded one, when i do i wont run it constantly in the background, i know how much of a resource hog that kind of software can be.

My pain is two-fold. With each successive version certain issues were addressed and new issues created. In the last version it finally got my wifi working without having the system hang, but like i said, whats the use in having a working wifi connection to download a video that i cant watch :p
