My beloved SmartFTP program no longer runs free, and I'm in a bit need for a good, free FTP program. I've briefly looked into it only to find that most other free ones end up putting a bit of their own crap into the files you upload onto your server using their program. I can't have any of that, I wouldn't like people to get things unawares whenever they download from my site.

Any suggestions for other FTP programs?

Noelie, Piggy - I'll definitely look into Filezilla...

Trawler - That plugin sounds reaally interesting. A plugin built into Firefox sounds like it'd be less hassle. Any good? Know if it adds anything into the files you upload?

Teadrinker - I'll be sure to check into PuTTY as well!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! It's loads of help...

If anyone knows of anything else, feel free to keep suggesting :) I'm tied to SmartFTP for 8 more days...

It is really easy to use, drag and drop inside a browser, doesn't add anything and lets you set up multiple accounts. http://fireftp.mozdev.org/

I'm still using the discontinued LeechFTP, but also FireFTP for Firefox.

the name is fireftp and you can download it ad mozillas addon website (which means it will update automatically as well). not sure what you mean with adding something to the download ..

Again, thanks for all the suggestions guys :D But now I've caught myself in a bit of trouble...

I decided to go for Filezilla

Maybe I'm just being dumb and haven't played around with it enough, but I'm not entirely sure how I can snatch the url for the files I uploaded into my server so that I can directly link it for download online. Can anyone help?

Assuming you have the file in a folder in your web space then it would be something like http://www.mysite.com/directory/filename.xxx where xxx is the file extension, directory is the name of the folder in your site and www.mysite.com is whatever the root name of your site is.

Thanks for the info Trawler - I figured it would work that way, but considering how lazy I am, I was hoping there was an easier way around that on Filezilla ;) SmartFTP had the option of just right-clicking the files you uploaded and copying their url. I guess they spoiled me with their ease and shortcuts, but I'm not just about to play $30 just so I can easily copy urls off  Oh well, beggars can't be choosers...

Yep - I installed Filezilla and played around with it. Other than the lack of easy url snatch, it does exactly what I need it to do :D Hopefully they'll put that in in a newer version...
