You don't turn public opinion by destroying great art. Or by even temporarily marring it with cheap soup.

Yes, she did get an international pulpit for her statement, but just the same way a mass shooter does.

Valuing art, even overvaluing art, isn't directly related to economics that influences poverty.

The accumulation of wealth in disproportionate ways is objectionable, but the fight against that errs if it attacks art to do it.

They could also kidnap and kill an oil company CEO, which would most certainly gain world infamy, but would not help their cause.

Help the poor. Advocate laws and policies that raise the poor into good lives. Don't become a social ill as you do it.

If I were the director of the National Gallery I wouldn't be in a hurry to unstick them. I would close the room, clear up the soup and provide the protesters with water and a dirt tray, then lock them in and come back on Monday morning. But that's just me.

The painting wasn't damaged; it is protected by glass as are many famous works these days. Perhaps these stupid, ill-informed harpies knew this to be the case, perhaps not. In any case, how much damage could tomato soup do to an oil painting? It was all about getting publicity for their demented ideas.
