Fund Raising Time!

Ah yes. That time when the kidz in the famille are all out flogging shit to buy jerseys and equipment for their sports team.

This year, my gnephew is selling cured meat sticks and we are having this.

So he has to sell 6 and we have bought 2 and now everybody is getting meat sticks in their stockings thisd year.

It is such a joke. Obviously the parentals are the ones having to make the pitch and decades on...I have no idea why people allow themselves to be taken by this shit, but6 here we are.

In a minute, I could sponsor the whole team but I see this as a rite of passage and a milestone for sports addicted families to cross.

What is your weakness> Chocolate bars? Girl Scout thin Mints? Some other nightmareish edible?
 
For me, it used to be chocolate-covered almonds. It's been a very long time since I bought any, and I can't even remember which charity used to sell them. Kinsmen, I think.
 
My weakness is for the kids selling anything to support band musicians, or scouts, boy or girl. I did not enjoy my years in scouting because of incessant and unchecked hazing, but the concept itself is a good one when it is supervised and led.
 
I am kind of with Jason on this. For me it is kids selling anything in general. I always came in second best seller (only behind the son of the teacher in charge of selling things) so I have a soft spot for kids raising money.


As for food items? I still hunt these down though I never see them anymore.

I do all I can to avoid kids selling stuff. At the moment, I take a surly view that a lot of these kids in my area are part of a well off family, as Mom's BMW indicates. Meanwhile, I'm low income. Let the family fund these activities, even if it means the next BMW has to be a lower trim level to save a few bucks.

Then, a lot of the stuff they are selling isn't anything I'm interested in. Cookies, for example, are not generally recognized as being part of a health promoting diet.

I remember this kind of thing when I was growing up. The PTA was called the PTSA in my elementary school. The "S" referred to the students. The students had no rights in the organization, of course, but the PTSA wanted them to feel included when they were sent out sell stuff at inflated prices. This included (but was probably not limited to) expensive spices, popcorn priced to make Orville Redenbacher's price look like a no-name generic popcorn, and candy. There were chintzy achievement awards, as I recall. to stir up the kids' best vulture instincts.

The last promotion I was probably part of was selling cheap jewelry almost priced to make Tiffanys feel faint. I don't remember how this happened--but basically I did no sales. My mother just decided to buy a couple of pieces, and call it good. I've heard of other parents who--for whatever reason--are tired of the selling game or don't like it, and just write a check as a contribution. And, if they itemize deductions, they could potentially have a deduction--unlike if they bought a small jar of salt with stale herbs for $20.

so we have bought three boxes of meat and have them earmarked for xmas presents to people who used to play hockey. They deserve this.

It's nice you are able to get past your bad experience!

One of the tew things I've done to support groups are shopping yard sales. Boy Scouts, though, were at one point off the list, due to the-then attitude BSA had towards gay people.
 
I used to enjoy the school kids fund raising with candy. I would see them carrying a suitcase box and buy half of them. Full size bars for a 1.00 each back in the day.
 
There is nothing I can think of that I really love but I pretty much always donate or any worthy case or fundraiser.
 
I have bought candy, cookies, and coupon books for nearby restaurants. My sister has bought giftwrapping paper. But I have managed the balls to refuse a couple of times.
 
Wouldn't mind a box of Girl Scout cookies those Smores are bomb AF!

Actually, it might be better to sell the cabbages cheap and Gas X at a premium. Get people to eat the cheap cabbages--and then have a sudden need for Gas X, and they'll willing to pay anything!

And we are ready and waiting for the Sqrl Scouts to come to the door flogging these healthy treats.

All we ever get are thin mints, so I have to say that the smoked, high fat meat sticks have the attention of my vascular system!

We haven't seen Girl Scouts selling door to door in a good many years. I wish they would come around with the thin mints.

All the smoked meats are so delicious but not good for the body. I love a well made cold antipasto with a quality hard salami and that smelly hard provolone cheese. I used to make pinwheels of paper thin batter dipped eggplant slices and prosciutto black peppered ham and add them to nice cold antipasto. So good.
 
When approached by the scouts at the entrance/exit of a store I just make a donation but never buy anything as I don't like most of what they sell.
