NEW YORK A new Gallup survey confirms that Americans claim they will be willing to vote for a woman (read: Hillary Clinton) or a black (read: Barack Obama) for president next year. But they still raise questions about voting for a well-qualified Mormon (Mitt Romney) or 72-year-old (John McCain) or someone who has been divorced twice (Rudy Giuliani).

Surprisingly, nearly as many say they would vote for a homosexual (55%) as say they would vote for a 72-year-old (57%).

Most censored: atheists.

"While Americans overwhelmingly say they would vote for a black, woman, Catholic, or Hispanic president, they are less likely to say they would support a Mormon candidate, one who is 72 years old, or one who has been married three times," Gallup reported.

Asked if they'd be willing to vote for a "generally well-qualified" candidate with the followign characterisitics, here's how the tally went in the Feb. 9- 11 poll.

Black 94%
Jewish 92%
A woman 88%
Hispanic 87%
Mormon 72%
Married for third time 67%
72 years of age 57%
A homosexual 55%
An atheist 45%

Conservatives express more misgivings about candidates from all of the above categories -- except the age question, where they are more disapproving of voting for someone 72 or over.

So the Dems need a black Jewish woman and it's in the bag!

Is Whoopi Goldberg Jewish?

So are the categories mutually exclusive? I am a gay athiest, does this mean I have 0% of being president, 24.75%, or 45% chance?

I say, you get to add the numbers together. 45%+55%=100%.

Congratulations, President Roland!

Sigh I didnt' read the numbers for I saw an info graph from the other site. Is this by chance the people that would vote for such a person and not the people who wouldn't vote for such a person !oops!

Don't tell me, me making this makes actually adds points to my favor of me being president ](*,)

It's interesting how the media keeps reinforcing factors that allow polarization when selecting a candidate. I for one would never vote for someone just because they're black, jewish, female, homosexual, mormon, etc... I think that's completely missing the point on selecting a QUALIFIED leader.

I mean what's the point of voting for someone on factors that can't (race and sexuality) or won't ever change (religion)? These things don't mean much and I don't think I'll ever buy the argument that a religious candidate is a good choice because of his/her morals since there's always some sort of skeleton in the closet with that type of thing. Don't even get me started about atheists because that just don't make sense to me. I never understood why these people are looked at in such a negative light by those who are religious.

I want a president (as long as the individual meets the qualifications for being president) who is intelligent, diplomatic and puts themselves in the situation of others when making decisions. Someone who will not discriminate and someone who will not abuse his or her powers.

I'll let you know when I turn 35! I assume you would help my run for presidency, unless my posts have turned you off over the last couple of years.

Hell, I'll even write your campaign song!

"He's a little bit of heaven, our I-C-O-7..."

How about a Black-Hispanic cross, lesbian Jewish woman, who is 72 years old, has been married three times, first to a Morman, then to an Atheist, and now to a reformed Druid/Episcopalian transgender midget? I think Whoopi would still work, no?
