Does anyone know of any good garageband alternatives for the PC? Something as similar to garageband would be awesome, with the same range of loops and such.

I heard about something called Mixcraft 4, but not sure how good it is?

My partner uses Finale. A bit expensive, but state of the art. I think it is $600 and requires plenty of memory for storage and RAM to operate smoothly, but it outclasses Garageband by far. You can download a demo version of Finale at their website. Does most everything except saving what you write. It's free at finale.com

If you had a Mac, Apple has a pro version Garageband that is pretty damn good, but unfortunately Windows can't run it.

If you've still got ubuntu on your PC, BlackWolf, Jokosher is a multi-track studio that will run on ubuntu.

Open a shell session (click Applications/Accessories/Terminal) and type:

Code:
sudo apt-get install jokosher

Enter your root password and hit "Return". Answer the prompts.

You then launch it by clicking Applications/Sound & Video/Jokosher Audio Editor.

I don't know if it's exactly what you want, but it's free.

hmmm fruity loops looks cool.

jokosher looks like it might be what i want. does it have music loops like garageband?

that is really what i am looking for. i want to be able to create music with music loops located in the program. i have been scrounging the internet for something and i found mixcraft but hell if i am buying that program.

Another freebie for ubuntu is Ardour.

Open a shell session (click Applications/Accessories/Terminal) and type:

Code:
sudo apt-get install ardour

Enter the root password, if prompted (you won't be re-promted for the password if you have already entered it to do something with root privileges this session, such as install Jokosher as above). Answer the single prompt.

Launch Ardour by clicking Applications/Sound & Video/Ardour GTK2

Ardour is also free.

I haven't used Jokosher, but people online say it does loops, and feels a lot like garageband.

Ardour does loops, too, apparently. Haven't used that one, either, though.

Both are completely free to try and even to keep, however. I just now installed both for the heck of it!

People say good things about the free AnvilStudio, but I've never used it myself:

http://www.anvilstudio.com/

Audicity is a fully-featured free audio editing app - it doesn't include loop playback, multi-tracking or MIDI sequencing, however:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

Neither of the above come close to GarageBand in features or ease of use. But for 50 bucks, Sony's ACID Music Studio is amazing value, with better features than Garage Band, and plenty of loops included:

There's a free trial download as well.

BTW, if you don't like Jokosher or Ardour just:

Code:
sudo apt-get remove jokosher

and/or

Code:
sudo apt-get remove ardour

i hate when i download a trial version of these things and they dont come with the loops

^ :confused::confused:

The Linux programs aren't trials. You get the full program free, with free updates forever.

That's what FOSS means.

i dont have ubuntu anymore, and they dont support windows sadly.

^ Not sure what you mean that ubuntu doesn't support Windows. I'm not the guy to talk to, but I know lots of people who claim to dual boot. I know Microsoft keeps changing the structure of NTFS (a closely guarded trade secret) to try to confuse GRUB and ntfs-3. Seems like the programmers always figure out a way to get around the tricks, though, with each new release of ubuntu (or whatever).

It's probably too complicated to bother with, but I did find this tutorial on dual-booting ubuntu with Vista:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

I've been using only Linux for the last year, so I know nothing about dual-booting. I wouldn't be surprised if ubuntu 8.04 (due out April 24) will install alongside Vista, however (unless Microsoft has managed to "fix" that with Vista SP1). Ubuntu 8.04 is still in alpha, but I've been majorly pleased with ubuntu 8.04 alpha-6 so far.

Final version of ubuntu 8.04 is due April 24 (it always ships on time).

ubuntu 8.04 alpha-6 available here:

no the programs dont support windows. i have dual booted Ubuntu before. i use WUBI instead of getting the ISO and going through all that crap.

For those of you who may be able to make use of it, I've been playing around a little with Jokosher tonight (which I downloaded to look at just because of this thread). Here it is running on ubuntu 8.04 alpha-6:

Cool. And seems easy to use. I doubt that it's as complete as GarageBand, but it's free. And it should improve with each subsequent release (current version is 0.9).

So I *cough* got *cough* Adobe Audition 3.0 because it was closest to what I wanted. And that whole loops problem was solved when I found all the loops on their site downloadable for free.

i am gonna take a wild gander and say they are free for all to use in other programs http://www.adobe.com/special/products/audition/loopology.html so if you are intereted

yeah, i just wish i knew how to add the loops into the program with out having to import them, and only have them disapear after a session. fucking sucks.

does anyone know how to do that? i went into the program folder, and there was no folder for it at all.

jokosher wasn't what i was looking for. i need something with loops in them, and jokosher is pretty much audacity, but with more features. i am thinking ardour will be the same way.
