Gays On Star Trek

I don't know, TOS is the Star Trek series I've seen the least of leading to ignorance of the Enterprise crew (with the exception of the movies). Although I wouldn't mind if James T. Kirk was bisexual, especially during the Academy years. :D

If it's a new series, then a definite yes.

Isn't it interesting: For a tv show that historically was at the forefront of breaking boundaries it is noticeable that there's never been explicit references to different sexualities.

Usually a series reflects the time period it was shot in; portrayal (positive or negative) of gays, bis, or lesbians just took a bit longer. So far at least, the only gay thing I can think of in Star Trek was in DS9 when Dax and another woman of the Trill species were kissing.

Maybe we need to start writing to the ST writers and let them know that gay people (especially me) actually watch sci-fi. :D

In the mirror universe, kirra and ezrie were lovers.

Yeah, but that was a lame substitute.

Not only that I read somewhere that when Brannon Braga was asked why he didn't include gay characters he made some comment along the lines of 'there would be no significant story-related reason for them to be there'

And then when someone asked why a certain character was Bolean and another was Klingon he'd just say, "No reason."

So...if you ask me their idea of infinite diversity doesn't really extend to the gay community.

BTW - here's a link to an interesting article...I don't agree with ALL of it but I do agree with a lot of it.

Thanks for the links, interesting :-)

I'm curious, do you think gay characters should be presented in the up coming Star Trek movie?

It doesn't matter what we think... it almost surely won't happen. If they had gotten rid of Rick Berman long enough ago, then we might be seeing gay characters after testing them out on Enterprise and maybe even Voyager, but there's little we're likely to see in such a jam-packed saga like a 2+ hr. TOS movie. Gay characters will be featured in the next Star Trek TV series (and there will be one, one day, regardless of what anyone at Paramount will tell you today).

In the meantime, we've always got fan series and films like Hidden Frontier/Odyssey and ST: Phase II, although in the latter's case they're taking their sweet time releasing what will eventually contain scenes like these:

The above pictures are from a fan adaptation of a story called "Blood and Fire" that included a gay couple and was originally meant to be shown WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back in 1988 on TNG. It will finally be produced, albeit not by Paramount, and not officially, but if you are David Gerrold, you will be very happy to see it completed and being shown on any screen after all this time.
