I'd throw the DVD on ide0 and the other harddrive as primary on ide1

so you'll have

ide0
hd0
cd0

ide1
hd1

Where ever it fits. No benefit really either way, but you are likely to find it easier to use one cable than the other. Just make sure that the drives are either set master/slave or all cable select.

the last i had heard was the hdd with the OS on it should be on it's own IDE cable if there was room in the system. so i would not add the second hdd to that ide cable. i'd add it as a slave and hook it up on the cable with the dvd drive.

whaaa? dvd on the same as the OS??? that's the worst. It only operates at the speed of the slowest drive (DVD).

mike is right. OS on its own IDE, make the other hard drive the master1 and DVD slave1

I read you shouldn't mix different devices (DVD/HD) on the same cable...

All the IDE0 for the HDDs, and reserve the IDE1 for the optical drives.

It's best if you have SATA. Just plug it and need not worry about jumpers or master/slave configs. And the wires are thin and compact. Can't resist using these lately. :)

You don't support them, then, do you?

Nice idea, but the connectors suck. They break, they go loose all the time, and they aren't very reliable.

well there's not a choice of putting them all on their own cables. But since it's a backup drive, and will probably never need to use its full speed, putting it on with the dvd shouldn't be an issue. You want to keep the OS drive totally unhindered though.
