Len Wiseman, director of "Live Free or Die Hard," is in negotiations to shoot the remake of "Escape From New York."

The project was set up at New Line in March with "300" star Gerard Butler attached as anti-hero Snake Plissken, a role played by Kurt Russell in John Carpenter's 1981 film.

The original was set in a futuristic 1997, when Manhattan had been turned into a giant maximum-security prison. The U.S. president's plane crashed on the island, and Plissken -- incarcerated for robbing a federal reserve bank -- was coerced into performing a rescue mission. The script for the remake will inject fresh elements.

I know the word "unnecessary" is misspelled on the title of the thread.

Sorry, it was a typing error.

Eek. What a pointless remake. I guess once the big companies are out of ideas they'll just screw over some of the greatest films to churn out the bucks. They've been fucking over the Japanese horros for a while, and it's a downhill trend.

The original was amazing, although they killed most of the characters they introduced. There was actually a second one called escape from LA.

Anyway, this is a completely unnecessary remake, like the title says. They're going to fuck up the movie for those who haven't seen it yet.

The sequel "Escape from L.A" was actually more than a remake. Even when John Carpenter himself directed it, he took all the plots from the original and relocated the action in L.A _
Not much of a sequel, right?

Escape From LA was terrible. I only liked the end when EVERY piece of technology was rendered useless. Can you imagine if that actually happened?

I Love Escape From New York, one of my all time favorite movies, they are only remaking it, to get money! Nothing will ever come close to the original

Thats the only reason that any movie is made in Hollywood.

And remakes, along with sequels, are a good investment because there is already a built in audience because of the familiarty with the original. Its much safer than releasing something original, like 'Stardust.' And thats whats wrong with Hollywood today.

It's sad.

Very, very sad. They focus too much on making money, and not enough on the movies they make.
