I have recently become a fan of Girlfriends.

Such a funny show.

watch the opening and you'll see why it's hilarious and the writing brilliant:

Joan: Monica, you can't afford any of those P's.....you ain't got no money!
Monica: You don't know what I got.
Joan: I know you got a stack of credit card bills over here screaming final notice!
Monica: "Final Notice?" Good! Cause I'm tired of being notified!
Joan: Monica..... once your credit is ruined you're trapped....you can't buy a house, you can't buy a car you can't even get a phone!
Monica: Joan, sweety...Really! If I ain't got nothing ain't nobody calling me no way!

Hilarious!

And I'm a male version of Joan to a T. Wish I was a Lynn but I'm hopelessly neurotic and complicated like Joan.

Funny! Joan is my favorite character.

I don't find her neurotic, rather I find her more responsible than the others.

I DID NOT LIKE TONY.......and how she treated Joan. joan tried everything to fix their friendship but was fed up for the years that tony had treated her badly.

but seriously, I did not even know this had become a big show....I did not even know this show existed until about four five weeks ago. since then I've been hooked!

I want to buy the series from season one in 2000. and i did hear about the sad way the series ended without a proper ending :-(

Is this supposed to be some sort of "Ghetto" version of "Sex And The City"?

I HATE "Sex And The City".

well, the producers didn't deny that it was similar to "Sex...", even proclaimed that mainstream america (namely meaning white folks) had Sex....and therefore, the african american community now had their own.

I usually hate sitcoms but this one makes me laugh.

the last time I liked a sitcom was Seinfeld and we know how long ago that was.

Toni is the reason why I never really got into "Girlfriends" when they first came on the air. I felt her character was way too selfish, shallow and manipulative and I couldn't imagine the other females actually being friends with such a person. By the sixth season I began warming up to the show and accepting for what it was-a LA-based African American version of "Sex and the City". I found out it really wasn't all that bad and the main characters (even Toni) were very relatable and endearing from time to time.

Even though when Toni left for New York, I personally thought the show got better. Some of the shows related to Maya's pregnancy had me glued to me chair on the verge of tears. They were able to dig into more serious and compelling storylines without Toni's "all about me" presence.

I seriously have seen maybe ten episodes so far....and maybe only 4 AFTER toni left. so far, they're all mostly funny to me.

but it does seem to have gotten better after toni leaves.

it seems they attempted to bring in monica to try to fill that hole that toni left, and truthfully, she would have been a good replacement. I like monica more than Toni. you're right, toni's character was self involved, shallow, rude and belligerent.

btw --- I have NEVER seen one episode of Sex and The City so I don't know how it compares.

Yup, Monica was definitely brought out as an almost castmember to fill the Toni void. I dunno, Monica's gold-diggery made more sense to me. Maybe it's b/c she's unapologetic about it and is a woman on a mission whereas Toni was portrayed to be a scared little girl looking only for attention.

Monica was just more funny than toni. The reason I think she was better was because her being funny was like she wasn't meant to be in funny situations because of her attitude, but she really was just funny. I love that clip and the end of that start...."Joan, sweety, really! If I aint got nothin aint nobody calling me no way!" that's hilarious to me!

Anyway enough of Toni and back on characters I actually like. Lynn is really the reason why I was drawn to the show. She is hands down, the funniest and most colorful character out of the main cast. Almost all of Lynn's plotlines were so outrageously hilarious. Like the time she stayed with Maya and all of Jabari's classmates thought the two of them were lesbians. "Well, it is those bangs". LOL, funny funny stuff! Everytime a rerun or marathon comes on I stop what it is I'm doing to watch these crazy heifers as William famously calls them.

I didn't see that episode. but it sounds hilarious!

I actually l ike the show because of Joan. I love this (don't know if you remember which show it was on, but she was on a kick of saying this):

Joan: "Am I right? Am I Right? WHAT?!?!?!?!"

Hilarious!

Funniest Joan episode (and gosh there are so many of them) but the one that takes the cake for me is when she gets into this big blow-up with her then boyfriend Ellis at the time for not being supportive.

Joan: "...and here's my dumb ass sitting on the floor eating Moroccan food when everyone knows I hate Moroccan food, but do you care? No, you just sit up there on your grand pooftah and rate me a 5 and a half!"

I know in writing it doesn't sound very comical, but the way she was the delivering the lines and the manic and crazed look she had on her face was TV gold. All in front of Toni, Lynn and Maya in her living room.

Who later told William, "In her defense Joan was on her period at the time" which led William to respond...

William: "Count me in for another $50 (they were all going in on a gift for Toni's upcoming wedding), if Joan's on her period I know how you ladies can get and I don't want you to snap my head off."

Great show, so many fantastic moments I don't know where to begin.

I haven't seen that episode but Joan is fabulous! Love her to death!

I love how William is always calling them "heffers" and "bitter old women".

anyhom, i'll be back on tomorrow to check if you posted something else!....gotsta go play me some tennis!

night night!

There is nothing "ghetto" about this show, I am so sick of the word being used out of context.

well....when toni was on there, she was so ..... as they would say....FRESNO! which is it seems a form of ghetto-ness.

but it was used in good humor!

I don't think Toni was ghetto. She was country (from a farm) and she wanted to expand her horizons so she got out of that area. If anyone on the show was ghetto, it was Mya. Remember, Toni didn't used to like Mya at first and considered her low class. Mya evolved into a sophisticated woman.

honestly, as I wrote above, I've only recently become a fan. I've only based my "girlfriends" show watching experience from seasons 6 and 7, sadly.

I'm getting caught up tho, but as far as mya being ghetto, you're right, she was more ghetto than the others.

I plan to go buy the dvd series for the seasons 1-5.

Well, the other three weren't ghetto at all. To me, ghetto is being from the streets and being of the streets. Mya had street sass and made a bad choice and had Jabari as a teen, but she was married worked hard. The other three didn't have street upbringings. The first five seasons were MUCH better than six and seven. The dynamic between Toni and Joan is what made the show interesting and exciting. Toni brought the drama. Without her, the show fell flat. They tried to fill the Toni void with Monica and it just didn't work. I didn't start watching the show when it debuted. I started catching the reruns around season 4/5 and then I was hooked. It is one of the greatest dramedies ever. I HEARD that there were talks of a movie ala Sex In the City, but I'm not sure about that.

that surprises me because my LEAST favorite character was Toni. Could NOT stand her! Was glad to see her go after season 6. And I actually think Monica was a good replacement.

Joan is my favorite character: silly, lovable, a little neurotic.

I've been filling my Girlfriends void with their spin-off series "The Game". It's almost as good as it's sister series. Tia Mowry from "Sister, Sister" fame plays Joan's cousin Melanie who is just as helplessly naive and neurotic as her relative.

The last couple of episodes have really been getting interesting. I wanna see how they're going to play off Malik outing his teammember as gay in upcoming episodes. And how did Derwin find out that Mel was dating Dr. McHottie on the side. This along with "Everybody Hates Chris" have been must see Friday Night TV for me.

unfortunately that show just doesn't seem to interest me.

Perhaps I just need to give it a chance.

Yeah that show is cool, I use to play college football and some of those story lines seem all to familiar.

Oh, wow. I think if you watch from the beginning you'll see the good and bad in Toni. You probably can't appreciate what she did for the show since you came late to it. When Toni left the show, there was an uproar amongst fans of the show because it changed everything. It's like if one of the Golden Girls left the show. It's just ot the same. Part of the reason Monica didn't fit in with them is that they didn't even like her when she first got with William. Also, I think her getting back with William was a way for them to try to bring Toni's flavor and the dynamic she created back to the show, but it didn't work for the fans. I never liked Monica. There was nothing redeeming about her -- if you saw her when she appeared on earlier seasons. Out of the main four, I liked Lynn the least. If her character disappeared I wouldn't have batted an eye.

After Toni left, I think they made Joan a little bit too silly. Before, Joan was a lawyer with a nice career. She was quirky but that's what made her unique and likeable, such as making them all practice to go Christmas caroling. Post-Toni, they made Joan annoying, in my opinion. Before, during troubled times, Joan tended to be the voice of reason and the one people looked to, but afterwards, she seemed to be on the sidelines and the one needing to be guided.

Hmm. I watch the show because I watched from the beginning, but it's more like a soap opera now with a bit of comedy thrown in. I actually don't care for the main character (Tia Mowry/Melanie). I don't know if it's her acting, the directing or what they're doing with her character, but she is off-putting to me. I liked the first season then they uppped the drama in the second season and it's been non-stop over-the-top drama ever since. The show has broken up the two stable relationships although they did give another character a stable relationship after a failed one. Watch at your own peril.

Girlfriend and The Game are both shows that i don't go outta my way to watch, but have enjoyed what i've seen of them. Maya's definately one of my favorite television characters. i guess i'm one of the few who actually liked Toni. Joan bugs the hell outta me. go back and forth on Lynn.

i really keep meaning to give The Game more of a chance. admittedly i only tuned in initially for Coby Bell(goddamn) but Malik's mom is HILARIOUS!!! Wendy Robinson really needs her own show.

I couldn't even tell you when the Game is on. guess I better give it a shot who knows maybe I'll like it.

Maya is now my least favorite character. When Toni was on Toni was my least favorite. But my favorite is Joan. She is a kick! Lynn is pretty funny.
I really liked Monica as an addition to the show. She's funny!

I just got through watching the episode where Joan has trouble pooping at Aaron's house! HILARIOUS!

My favorite part of this episode is where Monica and what's his name have sex at the restaurant with Lynn accidentally trapped behind the bar! That's Hilarious!

so funny! They flash to a quick scene where Monica is upside down! so funny!:rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:
