this is a new one (to me) that's hit my mother and a cousin, the target seems to be elderly people w/open social media pages. they create new profiles for the target, they took my mother's facebook persona and created an instagram page, then create a false obituary or story about someone in the family being sick and solicit donations. my mother's been locked out of her fb page over this one, I've reported the fake instagram page but it's still up. 
anyway, watch out for these heartstring stories about a death or sick loved one asking for donations, this is the time of year people start to feel generous so do your research. don't stop giving, but do your research! and tell your parents to fix their privacy settings!
