I can't actually decide if this is a gmail issue or a firefox one, but to read much of my email I now have to engage in screen acrobatics....

Many messages come in wider than the window provided for them. The only way to read the right-hand side is to scroll over. But the control for scrolling over is all the way at the bottom of the message, so reading a message goes like this --

Read start of line.
Scroll to bottom.
Scroll right.
Scroll up.
Read end of line.
Scroll down.
Scroll left.
Scroll up.

Repeat until finished.

Is there a way to have all message crunched to fit the narrow window provided?

Character encoding problem maybe... Alt-V, scroll down to Character Encoding, is it set to Western (ISO-8859-1)?

If so, try in GMail itself, the cogwheel on the top right below your username, change Setting there with the language set to English (US) or whichever you choose. If no luck, it's something else ;)

I am certain that the problem that you are having is NOT a google problem. It seems as if there has been some re-configuring with other programs that you use -- such as your browser.

Kulindahr, I saw a few threads on MozillaZine mentioning this issue (such as this one or this less helpful one). See if any of the information at this link helps.

In a few threads they mention it's invariably a browser extension or add-on (along the lines that star-warrior and GreatZeus are thinking) that might be interfering with the default Firefox rendering behavior. You could check your add-ons/extensions. Also, what Firefox version are you running? And, try with Google Chrome or Internet Explorer browsers and see if you have the issue there. Also, on GMail settings at the bottom I believe you can toggle to an "older" look and feel which might resolve the issue for you.

On one of those links I found an explanation that said the newer Firefox has a conflict with Windows 7, and there's no way to fix it. Yay.

I remember seeing an "older look" button before, but now I can't find it.

While I was reading that stuff I got interrupted by an announcement that a Logitech update was available. I installed it, and guess what? I can scroll laterally again! That's still a clumsy way to read e-mail, but it's a vast improvement.

I'll have to watch that one site in case someone comes up with a patch to deal with the Firefox<>Win7 conflict.

Nobody in their right mind would sign up to gmail. I have to say AOL is the same. Sign up to HOTMAIL - it's free and you can retrieve your emails from anywhere in the world using whatever computer you wish to choose. I'm not an employee of Hotmail by the way (I'm a civil servant) but when you go to thank me for this advice me email is [removed]

and this is the 3rd post where you advertise hotmail since you joined .. just today.

and still .. hotmail always has been utter crap .. and always will be ;)
