I give up on Thunderbird. It simply isn't compatible with my ISP and nothing I do will get it work. I can download Emails from my ISP, but I can't send them. I'm not the only one. Apparently it's a widespread problem with Sympatico which is now owned by Microsoft. Sympatico and Thunderbird simply cannot play in the same sandbox.

I still use Netscape mail on my old desktop system.

Here is a list of the top 12 programs. Your recommendations?

i refuse to believe that it is impossible to make it work with thunderbird unless your isp is intentionally blocking it.

It's not so much that Sympatico is blocking it as it is that they simply don't seem to be compatible. It's not a new problem, either. It goes back at least to 2005 according to these 2 forums:

What's worse is that Sympatico recently changed their POP and SMTP settings. They are both set according to Sympatico's instruction page and this link which was supplied in another thread: http://www.cobolhacker.com/?p=810

The POP settings work and I can receive Emails, but the outgoing Emails will not 'send'.

Since early June, I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to send an Email.

I guess persistence pays off. I kept at it and went through the settings line by line, turning things on and off. I finally turned off the culprit which was preventing me from sending Emails.

LOL... Cool! So what WAS it????

It was an authorisation switch that was turned 'on'. It was above the SSL/TLS selection box. I might have thought it was necessary to initiate the SSL. I noticed in the POP server info that the check box was below the SSL/TLS selection box and unchecked. I switched it off in the SMTP server info and tested an Email. It was sent with no problems.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I really like Windows Live Mail for Win7. I'm no MS fanboy, but I really like this mail program (as long as you are not using IMAP).

I tried WLM as well as Incredimail. I couldn't get either of them to work, either. I didn't care for WLM, though. Even my old Netscape was a better program as far as I'm concerned.

I can't get Thunderbird to work with Yahoo mail on windows 7. I have no problem sending mail, but it won't let me access my inbox. I get this message every time I try to enter my password:

"Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop.mail.yahoo.com responded: pop not allowed for user."

Does anyone know what I need to do?

Hey Alister! Basic question, but do you have the type of Yahoo account that allows an external (POP3) E-mail client like Thunderbird? For example, Yahoo! Mail Plus (link with Thunderbird tip). You can check out this page for the section about enabling "Web & POP Access" settings on your Webmail interface, but my Yahoo Mail account for instance doesn't have that option because it's an old-school basic one. There's this workaround for an Asia region change, as well, if you don't have the Pop & Forwarding option - can't say it'd work for sure, but some users report success.
