Hello everyone,

I would like your opinions on what the best video capturing software is. I have googled quite a while but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for; I only found screen capturing programs, the kind that film everything (cursor movement, opening tabs etc.).

But as of yet I haven't found software that lets you download the actual video files you play on websites. I used to have Freecorder Video Capture, but it doesn't work any more. This was actually the perfect program; whenever I opened a video on whatever website, the file would show up in a list when I had the program running and I could save it to my computer. Is there anything like that still out there?

If it matters: I'm using Windows 7 and usually surf the net with Chrome.

Thanks in advance!

VideoDownloadHelper (5.3.1.1-signed) rarely fails me. I use Chrome as my primary browser, but I launch Firefox just to use that extension if there's something I want to watch later/offline. The term "video capturing software" might be throwing off your search terms or recommendations - you're not really "capturing" anything (which does imply screencapturing) so much as accessing a file directly server-side, so downloading it.

Is the Chrome version of this supporting downloads for watching videos offline? I wouldn't be against installing Firefox per se, but I don't like to install more programs than necessary.

There is a Chrome port of it, yes. I've not tried it, though. Give it a whirl and see how it does. :) Not all sites/formats are supported, however.

Oh wait. Following your advice, I went on the Chrome extensions website and clicked through a few programs and have now found one that lets one download everything. Though when I added the extension, it said that the program will be able to read my browsing history and things like that. Will this cease once I remove the extension again?

EDIT: I'm so sorry, my manners have already gone to Bedfordshire. Of course I thank you for your help.

That's a pretty standard message with Chrome Add-ons; frequently that kind of activity needs to happen in order for the Add-ons to do their specific thing they're meant for. You want Downloadhelper for instance to accumulate a list of the embedded video feeds on pages you visit - if you're poking around Youtube and watch 5 videos, those 5 videos need to be in the roster that Downloadhelper can get if you so select it. Since that warning applies to Add-ons, not installing them or removing one won't present that activity or message particular to that one add-on, no. But you can't always have the cool stuff you want without giving up a little bit of your browsing pattern. :)

Anyway, not much else I can say or offer in this thread. Hope you find a good tool that helps you out!

Yes, thank you so much! With your pointer in the right direction, I found exactly what I was looking for.

Anyhow, it's late and I'll join my manners now. Good night.
