They wouldnt do that. This is most likely all automated by robots and machines. Not to mention, Google always fights tooth and nail to protect ones privacy.

I'd never trust anything stored online. You can never be sure if you will be able to access to your data, nor do you know how many people are viewing, downloading, modifying, and discussing your private stuff.

What if Google decides after a year they don't want to be in the data storage business, and just erases everything? What if Google gets subpoenaed and ordered to scan all their stored data for "subversive" material? What if someone hacks into the system and damages your data? And how long will it be before Google scans everyone's data and sells "general, nonidentifying" information about you to advertisers. Soon, your email inbox is filling up with offers to subscribe to Advocate and DNA. Or when your go online to get your stuff, a pop-up box offers $5.00 off admission to a gay bar in the vicinity of your IP address?

A few years ago, I tried to use a free online data storage service. I set up a username and password, but the damn thing would never let me in. I complained about it, and they said I must be using the wrong username/password. They kindly emailed me my correct username and password, which were exactly the same ones I had been trying anyway. Despite several email exchanges and attempts to fix the problem, I never did succeed in getting into their system to store anything. Fortunately, I didn't lose any data, since they never gave me access to my storage space. I could imagine setting up an online storage system and then forgetting the password or having some system problem "lose" your password - your precious data never to be seem again! (Well, maybe the CIA could give you their backup copy of your data).

they already do this don't they? i have Gmail drive in "my computer" that takes me to their online storage stuff. it shows up as an email attachment in my gmail email, so i tend not to use it.

They wouldnt do that.

Dangerous words, BlackWolf, dangerous words. The fact that Google may not be peeking into our stuff now doesn't mean they won't do it in the future. And even if Google keeps word, what to think of hackers and court orders? I can definitely see the latter becoming an issue.

Online file storage is not for any kind of sensitive data.

Google is one company that I trust and I love their services. It's not like it's some company no one has heard of before. Google is king of the internet. They have hundreds of thousands of servers all over the world with a great infrastructure so it is VERY unlikely that you won't be able to access your files (unless there is a problem at your end).

In my opinion your data is 100x more secure at Google than a smaller company who wouldn't have the state of the art technology that Google does.

Anyway that's my opinion.

And remember Google's motto is "Don't be evil" :p.

We have something similar at work. Each of us has 256mb of storage space for private or public files. When I want to share a document, I send you a link (ticket) to the file in my public folder and set permissions for that file. If we are working on a spreadsheet then I can make it so you can edit it or if it's a file I just want you to view I'll make it so it's read only. The storage space is not for archival purposes but for off site access for those of us who do not have remote desktop. It's real cool, it's just like a web hosting set up. Plus there is no bandwidth limits. If I want to send out a pdf file link to 100 people, there is no limit to how many downloads my storage can have.

I can see what Google wants to do, but if you want to archive your porn then just buy an external hard drive. Now as far as sharing music or movies with friends (the first thing I thought about) I'm sure there is going to be an upload file size limit.

It would be cool to share a mega mix with a friend that can't get large email files or mp3's at work. I have a friend that is blocked at work from almost everything! So I could see me using it for that, both of us can share a storage space.
