Ive decided to grow out my hair. But my entire life ive had short hair. Ive decided to grow it down to my shoulders. I surf a lot and i just want to be the cliche surfer dude for this summer. My hair looks great the way i usually wear it. But as its growing, ive noticed for the first time that its dry. If i rub it by my ear i can hear a crackly noise. And its poofy and staticy. Its not long enough for a straightener. But it kind of looks like crap. What do i do to go from a poofy staticy head full of hair to sleek shiny smooth static free hair? I want Brandon Rouths hair from Zach and Miri. God if that mans not sexy enough already, he has to have the world's males' best hair too! So lets go guys, help me out here!

You're in the middle section, where you can't do much with it. Too long to define and too short to tie back. Give it time and you'll be fine.

If you've always kept your hair short, you're in for some frustration over the next 2-3 months.

You've probably never had to use product in your hair. Now you will - both to moisturize your hair and to take out some of the curl in it if you want the style that you're suggesting.

suggested products etc? Techniques? How to use?

I should have warned you guys, im a TOTAL butch. I did not get the hair styler gene!!! I'm clueless

Your hairdresser could probably make some suggestions or you could drop into a salon or a store that has hair products (Sephora, Ulta, etc) and ask.

If you want suggestions here, then post a picture of your hair- cover your face if you want- and that will give us an idea of whether the issue is that you need a defrizzer, a relaxer, a smoothing gel, etc.

What products (shampoo, conditioner, etc) are you currently using? What kind of hair do you have? What kind of "surfer hair" do you want to have?

(You surf in yuba city??)

Well, first of all - find yourself a good salon. There are actually salons for men now - so see if you can find one. If you cannot, just suck it up and find one that is not too full of the screaming suburban housewives. Also - try to stay away from a large chain - I have gotten some crappy hair cuts from those places. Now, when you make your appointment be sure to ask for someone who specializes in MEN's haircuts - when you get there tell them what you are trying to accomplish - they will know what to do with your hair.

Now - your new word for the day - "PRODUCT". You will need to use shampoo, conditioner, and a styling product to keep your hair healthy and manageable. Trust me, more guys use product than you realize - and you will not lose any of your butch just by using hair products. You may find that people will find you more attractive with hair that is not all over the place. Good luck!

When I was growing out my hair Biotin was recommended, its a vitamin that generates helthy hair and nail growth.

Go with Transpogue's advice, she knows her stuff :P I have been growing out my hair for more than a year now, and it's reaching my shoulders. It was really hard because I had to avoid most hairgels in the market because they have alcohol and that wuold seriously fuck my hair up. I got myself a herbal based hairgel that actually nurtures it a lot, after I wash it off, my hair is so smooth and shiny, it's great. Although, I wouldn't think that's available in the states, given that herbal products are more easily sold here in central america. Aside from that, I wash it with shampoo and then use conditioner on it. I try to wash it in the nights and then in the morning I use a moisturizing treatment instead of the shampoo and conditioner and it's been doing wonders to it so far. The hardest time will be when it's not long enough to tie it up, and too long to keep it styled all the time, in those times, just have a lot of patience and use products, but try to use stuff that is good for it.

(You surf in yuba city??)

I was using biolage for a while, but it made my hair limp. So i was referred to Mane 'n Tale. Worked pretty good, made my hair really soft and manageable so ive been using that. To style it, i use fiber pomade. Then once its where i want it, i hit it with some hairspray. I also blowdry A LOT which i think i need to stop. My hair is a little thin, but not thinning so thats good. But its like dry and staticy and poofy. Kind of like african american hair i guess? Its also wavy but once it hits a certain length, i have ringlets, perfectly shaped ringlets around the edge of my hair lol! I see people who have sleek straight hair and it looks like the hair moves individually, my hair kind of clumps and doesnt like to move. I was guessing it was half becuase of the length, i think once it was longer it would have more leverage and move easier. I just want straight hair that moves a lot.

Of course i dont surf in Yuba City, i spend a lot of time in La Jolla. Ill be moving to LA for school by August, i wish i could live in La Jolla but school is in pasadena so i figured LA was a good compromise since i probably wont get to surf unless its ther weekends. And BTW, i probably wont be surfing until August so i can keep it out of the saltwater etc until its pretty good length. By the time i move there ill also be done losing weight(hopefully) and i can go for that all out look!

I think my hair is like yours. How long is your hair right now? What brand pomade are you using? It might be the culprit to your frizzy hair. I find that pomades for me are best only when I have shorter hair (I used to have a faux hawk), but even if I use just a little it weighs down my hair a lot. Also, how do you blow dry your hair? You probably should put down the blow dryer and walk away, lol. I just towel dry, add some product, use a wide tooth comb to get everything in the proper general direction, and then "finger comb" until it's mostly dry. You might want to try a leave in conditioner or serum that you apply after towel drying when your hair is still slightly moist. I use "Frizz Ease extra-strength hair serum" and then finish with "Goldwell calming milk."

Where do u surf in La Jolla? I don't surf much and I'm not very good so I stick to the easy stuff at shores and sometimes tp.

I think its just called La Jolla beach, its got fire pits and a nice parking lot. A cement fenc/boarder that serves as a nce bench. To the far left theres a nice motel that has patio furniture in the sand on the beach, and they serve you breakfast there. I surf whenever i can get down there. I like to boogy board and use a skimmer a lot but i also surf- just when we're about to go home because after a day of surfing, i need a good 8 hours of rest!! Im terrible at it, but i love it. Once i live there, ill go every chance i get!!!

Those pics are current, right now my hair is short. I grew it out down to my eyes but i had a job interview and panicked! lol!!!!

No, pomade is my angel lol. I usually use Crew fiber, but lately ive been using this $3/can orange can stuff from wal mart that was recomended. It works, but its so hard that i have to blow dry it to melt it and it instantly freezes up and rips out my hair lol! I hate it but i works.

My hair is frizzy and full of static. I dont think it would be frizzy if it wasnt so full of static.

I have to blow dry it in order to get the style i want. My hair is very rebelious. I can comb it use gel, do anything i want to try but it goes back to wherever it wants to be. Unless i blow dry it into submission when its still wet.

Leave in conditioner huh? i think i tried one but it just made my hair look wet and really thin and i dont think i liked it, how exactly do you use it? Just towel dry my hair, then rub some in? Do i style my hair once its in, or style it and then put it on top? What the hell is goldwell calming milk?

So your from San Diego, i can probably use a tour guide once im there lol. Ill have to add you to my friends list here!

BTW; looks like photobucket is deleting my pics so check out myspace.com/joshbybee

But SHHHHH!!! im not out lol.

You can upload pics directly in your posts. Sounds like you go to Shores. The beach has different names all along the coastline with different types of waves and landscape. You might want to try Blacks, which is a nude beach that's usually full of older guys who have no manners and/or hook up in the cliffs.

Fiber is great only for shorter hair, but I think it might very well be the source of your problems when your hair is longer. Is the orange can stuff water based or wax/oil based? Either way, using a blowdryer to melt anything onto your hair is horribly wrong! You're so rough with your hair. It's no wonder your hair is so rebelious. If you really feel the need to blow dry, you need something specifically for blowdrying that will protect your hair from the heat. You can get pomades/creams that are specifically for longer hair that will give it shine and not weigh it down if you're really set on using them.

Go to www.tresseme.com and look through the different categories of styling products they have, particularly the heat and the sleek ones. You can get their stuff at Walmart, Target, and other drug stores. They're a lot cheaper than salon products.

For me, Redken for Men products are very good. Not too expensive either, but very good products.
