As for Robert, I really don't believe you, because if the police found out or any one of those people, the school would have a major lawsuit. Its illegal to have cameras in bathrooms, showers, lockerooms etc... I know there aren't cameras but to have someone watching is very similar, considering you are hidden behind a one way mirror aka surveilance. Unless they were doing a study on you, by having you watch these guys and see how you react...

In the US, it's actually possibly NOT illegal in privately funded universities which don't accept federal dollars. Sometimes clauses like this are written into new Freshmen orientation forms you sign without ever reading it. When I was in university there was a big brouhaha about a less invasive thing that went on (logs were kept about how many and which women took free condoms from a safe sex group), and the students were told "at a private university that you willingly choose to attend, we make most of the rules." I know this because one of the women was my sister.

I can't remember all the details, but in the 1700s Congress passed a law making private universities exempt from certain classes of laws. It's obscure and most people don't even know about it. I can ask my sister when I see her next week.

The building was built that way, probably in the 1960s. It was not covered with one-way mirrors, but with black glass. If the lights had been on inside, it would have been completely visible that someone was inside. There were also gauges and dials and thermostats and all kinds of equipment that I did not have to monitor -- that was done during the day or automatically, except occasionally someone would come in and take readings.

It never occurred to me then or now that it might be illegal to have showers monitored for slip-and-falls or illicit activities. There were three vast shower rooms and this small booth was at the center.

The next time I'm there, I will be interested to see if the guard booth is gone.

I think this is more the case. I'm a psych student and its very common to tell the participant that they are testing for A when in actuality they are testing for B.
