My 30 year old neighbor told me that he needs a gym buddy to spot him as he does his bench reps. I asked what he presses and he told me 240 lbs. He is 6' and weighs about 180.
Seems like a lot for a guy that size. He also told me that he has a trainer and it runs him $200. per month... that also seems like a lot.

Now, let me ask... do you think that he was hinting around for me to be the gym buddy? Hell, I am 69 years old. I hang out with the younger guys, joke, have a beer or 2 or 3 (ok, maybe 4 or 5) and we chew the fat about anything and shoot hoops.

We do the typical male bonding thing, joke about "prison strength lube... it's an inside joke" yada yada. Make a lot of off color joke, typical guy stuff.

Am I reading to much in to this? BTW, while it would be interesting to see him in the locker room, I have zero interest past that.

Can you lift 240 lbs? Is he suicidal?

I could do 240 at 30 years old. And I weighed 180. That's not as high as some guys think, especially if you had been doing it steadily for years and you had good form while lifting. (Bad form is another story and if you only weighed 180, you could hurt yourself.) I'd been bodybuilding for around 10 years by 1981. A strong/consistent bodybuilder could do around 1 1/2 times his weight back then (without steroids). If you were juicing, you could do twice your weight. Needless to say, most of the pros - like Arnold - were heavily juiced.

Your neighbor might just want to impress you. That seems to be the case nowadays, where it seems more like an addiction for younger guys than just a fun pastime as it was back then.

Sounds like an open invitation for you to be his gym buddy.

I used to work with a guy and he would make comments "I could use a nice cold beer after work" and then i say lets get a drink after work and he gets all excited. It's annoying when people drop hints instead of directly telling you.

Is he planning on lifting from home or at the gym? If at the gym, it seems like an imposition to ask or hint that you to do this for him unless you're going to the gym to work out too.

Anyway, I doubt he's looking for more than a spotter, and whether he wanted you or not I can't say. My experience with weight lifters though is that they only do a few reps with the heavy weight, pushing to their limit. When their muscles fail, you grab and help him lift it up back to the bar rest...he still has some strength left to assist raising the weight. I used to work out in a friend's basement with him...he knew I was gay and I knew he was straight, we just worked out together with no hint of anything more happening. I did enjoy when he spotted for me though...his sweaty crotch was right above my head and he had a nice bulge.

When free weight bench pressing, 240lbs is a deadly amount of weight.

In the past, peeonme, this thread's author, has told us that he is in his mid 60s, and also that he is experiencing visibly noticable upper body muscular atrophy on his right side. Let's not encourage him to get physically involved, please.

I'm sure that the 'buddy' was only putting forth a "should you hear of anyone else in my situation, let me know" type proposition.

I have come to believe that the neighbor mentioned it to me to let me know how much he could bench press.

There are likely guys in the fetish forum who would like to see videos of his squats.

What I want to know is, where did you find a group of younger guys to hang out with like you described? I'm almost as old as you are and the only "groups" I see are my age or older. Are they your neighbors? I'm jealous.

Yes, they are my neighbors. I live in a mobile home park and we interact quite a bit.

$200 a month for a trainer is a huge rip off, man that is a racket right there! 240 isn't really that much when you break it down. 2 45's on each side plus the bar is 225. So just add a 10 on each side and you are there! I used to see older guys in the gym all the time in the before times LOL. Though most of them were perving on the ladies working out. :rotflmao:

Don't do it. You will end up with an explosive hernia and a lawsuit.
