Well, I created my profile yesterday, New Year's Eve. I rang in the New Year with little fanfare, and it was just what the doctor ordered..for this year at least. I had no desire to get out and revel with the crowds this year. I am no stick in the mud. I simply wanted to relax and welcome the new year at my own pace.
I plan on heading out to the base gym in about an hour. I am so thankful for having great benefits in the military; one being that we have free access to all gym bases. And no, that is not a free pass to go cruising on all of them either....or is it?
New Year's resolutions? None really. I set my goals, I baseline them, and then I improve on the weak areas. The gym is not my life, but remaining healthy is a huge factor. As an older guy, I have surrendered to the idea that mass is not as important as it once was back when I was a young pup. I tend to be more careful in my technique, ensuring that I don't pull a muscle....or hurt my ego...lol. Also at the gym, you meet great people, and you pick up tips from other lifters in the process. But once the iPod goes on, I'm in my own world and I can focus on the hour or so I spend on the irons.
I am an Information Systems Tech....basically a big nerd. I spend most of my time working on programs, and honing my UNIX skills in a crap load of projects. The life of a computer geek can be semi-monastic, if you will. Of course I knew that quite a while ago. I am neither a Microsoft guy, nor a Dell person. Hey, I'm ok with outsourcing to other countries, but by golly, you'd better be skilled in cryptology to decipher words through those thick accents. And save the racist remarks, I calls 'em as I sees 'em. This brings me back to being self-sufficient in my field. I like to build my own systems, but often find myself as the computer technician for family and friends. And the only accent they'll hear from me is expletives....under my breath.
I also have a BFA in Graphic Design. University of Utah. I worked for several design firms in the Intermountain West before the Navy came calling. I find design elements in furniture to be particularly interesting. And I also enjoy product design in household items to be very inspiring. I am very protective of my work after having been swindled by an agent while in school. He sold pieces of my artwork without my permission, and I found them published through a fellow colleague. I could've strangled the dirtbag. OK, deep breaths...happy place. Aahh. Go Utes!
I love Sci-Fi, and though not a Trekker in the truest sense of the word, I have been an avid follower of the series...all except Deep Space Nine. I tried to embrace it, but I couldn't. That space station meets wormhole thing just didn't cut it for me.
OK, the personal life. I haven't had many relationships. I can count on one hand the number of serious relationships I have been in...six. Haha, ok that was bad. Honestly, at this stage in my life, I have grown to be quite the selfish person. OK, before you close this blog, what I meant about selfish is that I am quite comfortable with the way how things are at this point in my life. Sure, I miss waking up next to someone, or sharing the shower in the morning and evening. But life certainly hasn't passed me by. I am as low maintenance as one could be, but I find the general responsibilities to be daunting most times. I often wonder how I could possibly care for someone else knowing how difficult it can be for me to perform even the most basic life skills. No, I don't have a short fuse. I do require a strong sense of order though...and perhaps therein lies the problem. My friends think I'm too uptight, and insist that I unwind. They're right. Which is why I can't speak highly enough of them. They are so grounded...yet buffoonish frat boys once you ply them with alcohol. Will I get into another relationship....probably. But for now, the sex is great and my life seems to have enough order to it that I really have no room to complain.
Keep the comments positive, no matter how boring you find my blog.
