Has your freedom been taken away (off)?

Do you think you are as free as any other straight people out there or you have to hide lots of things from society?

No I feel as free as anyone around me. But then again, I don't live in the States.
Let's hope the new house brings more freedom !

Gays can't marry or have civil unions in my State. So, I'm not as equal as straight people.

Generally, I think we're free if you consider society.

But int erms of equality, we aren't legally equal to heterosexuals.

I've just been watching X-men 2 - anyone else drawn any analogies from that?

X-Men was originally created as an analogy to adolescence and that awkwardness.

Then it was written as the Civil Rights movement took swing to parallel that.

Int he advent of the gay civil rights movement, the comics have taken that flavor along with them, so it's no wonder that it appears to mimic the gay struggle, (especially in their younger-themed books) since mutant teens have to 'come out' to their parents and the parallels are knowingly drawn together in the comics.

For example, Young Avengers features two heroes who are in a gay relationship together and they talked about coming out to their parents as superheroes but it turns out that their parents mistook it as them outing themselves as gay. Their parents supported them fully, but still don't know that they're closet superheroes.

It's also taken a turn with the state of the world involving civil rights and the compromise of civil liberties (see Civil War plot going on right now).

The X-Men movies were consciously/subconsciously written to note the gay struggle (its director/writer is gay) and the cure plotline of X3 is lifted from the current Astonishing X-Mens toryline where Emma Frost asks the doctor what's next "A cure for the gay gene?".

So tell your friend to shut up, because it's real and it's there on purpose.

I think to a certain extent, we are restricted in our freedoms.

If I wanted to walk down the street, holding the hand of a partner, I would no doubt receive many a strange look from people passing by.

However, a straight couple would hardly be recognized or would receive those adoring looks from people...You know, the ones people always give young lovers.



I've seen some people say that they've never had freedom taken away, as they've never had it.

Many countries have documents that enshrine human rights of expression, freedom, pursuit of happiness, equality, etc....

So to say you had no rights to begin with, well that's slightly false.


As for myself, well...I do feel that I am somewhat confined by sociality ideals. The idea that if I want to be completely out, I have to become a total "Queen". You know, so people don't think I'm straight....Which apparently, almost everyone does.

No I don't feel any less free. I am entitled to just the same things at straight people, I believe I can even get married, though I would never consider that. The only confines are those of societies expectations, and the lengths I am prepared to go to adhere to them.

So today I want to walk along the street holding my boyfriends hand.

NO way do my Partner and I have the right to by marriage, leave property or anything else, unless we do it via a will or something of a strictly legal nature; NOT via a marriage!

I don't think most straight people realize just how important civil rights for Gays really is...

I think they take for granted the freedoms they possess.

If only they lived in our shoes for a period of time, "IF ONLY"!

Hahaha, I haven't seen X-Men 2, but I've seen 1 and 3, and my friend just laughed at me when I said it's pretty much a parallel with the gay struggle. But it totally is. In the third one, they develop a vaccine to "demutate" people ...

The tragic thing is though, that the average ignorant cinema-going public probably can empathise with the mutants, but if it were about sexuality, they would be like "ewww".

Very true, the one part of the film I particularly picked up on was when the Mother of the Ice-Kid said 'Have you just tried not being a mutant?' Pfft.

My appearance does change depending on my environment - I am sometimes completely invisable to all around me - and I have the ability to create a storm at will.
