Last year this part of the forest around Mt. Hood burned.
This year there's an eerie landscape to hike through.
For around a mile, the hike passes through acres of it. Clouds of ash blow up from your feet, the woods crack and groan and the air smells of charcoal.
The blackened bark is falling from the trees.
But life is creeping back.
And eventually, you spill out into alpine meadows...
...at the mountain's grace.
