Many years ago I donated to a Kickstarter for a traditional hand animated movie by a bunch of ex Disney and Don Bluth animators. For donating I was in the level of supposedly getting a pin, some stickers and some other things I forget including copy of the film. I did get my pin (the only thing I wanted as member Lex here turned me on to them) and the stickers, but they kept updating that the film funded enough to be turned into 5 films and was delayed.

About once a year I get an update telling me how things are going. Today they wrote the films are done, and they will have the films ready to be watched in a bit.

I once also donated to my favorite band on Pledge Music after they went independent. I got a signed poster and a signed copy of the documentary made about them by the entire then current band. The poster I framed and is on display in my bedroom, but I have never watched the DVD.

Have you ever donated to such things?

I don't recall, but doubt it.

My donations are usually to the arts and to children's activities and churches.

Most recently, a friend back home is a director of events at the community center, and she organizes children's plays and summer camps to promote the arts, so I try to be an angel for them when I can. It feels really good to get a program and see where they produced a play in a little town.

I am not a supporter of kick-starters generally. Even though I might be supportive of what they are doing.

We actually have Ontario and Federal based funds for movies and animation.

I would say though that I have taken a bath on investing in various start-up ventures that appealed to my interest in clean energy, etc. The way that worked though is that I would take the profits from one of the old school equities and put it toward the mavericks.

I have to say that I have never seen a dime of returns. It always seems that the age of Google, MAC, Microsoft, et al has always passed us.

To be clear, which I wasn't in the OP. This was more about the goodies we could get than the donation itself. That is why I said Go Fund Me didn't count.

I have heard of people getting some cool things that are collectable for donating to such things.
