This week is the 50th anniversary of the release of Steven Spielberg's classic summer blockbuster JAWS. Have you seen it?
I rewatch it every summer. In the 70s I read the book and saw the movie on the day it was released, June 20th, 1975.

It's one of my all time favorite movies.

What's your rating of JAWS 1-10. 10 = great.

THANKS

I'm not so sure I have ever actually sat through the whole thing. On the basis of a lack of impact, 3.

Just watched it on Sunday. For the umpteenthtime. Love it! The sequels were lame.

It was the first "summer blockbuster", and actually drove people from the water.

SNL's "land shark" bits were a hilarious result of the craze.

A solid 10, or 11 if you're a Spinal Tap fan.

I watched it again Sunday and was impressed with the cinematography. Exclude the whole terrible looking fake shark. The scenes on the boat are amazing. Robert Shaw as Quint makes the whole movie.

It has been a long time since I saw it so I don't know my rating, but if you made me guess it would be a 8/10. Keep in mind though by the time I saw it many other films had ripped it off.

I give it a 10. I remember seeing that movie when it came out. I was 17, plus some of the locations I recognized. I had cousins that lived on the island and I got to stay with them in the late 60's early 70's during the summers.

I first saw Jaws in the cinema way back in 1975, when I was 14. I've watched it dozens of times over the years since then, and I still love it.

It's my all-time favourite film.

I rate it 10 out of 10. (y)

A fantastic movie and if the mechanical shark had worked as they wanted it to probably would have been totally forgettable. But since the shark seldom worked Spielberg created a feeling of suspense and fear of what you did not see. That made the movie and made Spielberg a household name as a director.

The iconic lobby poster showing the young woman swimming on the surface while the shark invades her personal space wasn't derived from any specific scene in the movie. Instead, it was based upon artwork for the paperback edition of Peter Benchley's novel. :=D:

One of the best take-offs of that poster :rotflmao:

I remember reading that the paperback company (Bantam) gave Universal permission to use the artwork for the poster, marketing and merchandising. They felt it would help sell books, which it did.

However if Bantam had licensed the image rather than granting permission for use they would have made more money from the use of the artwork than they ever made selling copies of the novel.

I saw it in Atlanta, GA, in Peachtree Mall, while I was on a choir tour with a local youth group from my hometown. I was probably 14. It was exciting. The theater in the mall had a big shark's nose and mouth cardboard print of JAWS and you could walk through it into the theater through its mouth.

My favorite parts were the music, the tension, Shaw's performance, and especially Dreyfuss'. He was perfectly cast for the underestimator. The rest of the acting was pretty much on the TV Movie-of-the-Week level, with stock characters.

At the time, due to the hype, and my tender years, I'm sure I would have given it a 9 or 10. Today, a very solid 7 or 8. It deserves its perch in cinema history.

I will say it much maligned sharks, but it also led many a person to read up on them, and they never would have without all that hype. So, I suspect in the final reckoning, animals were protected because of the surge in interest.

As a footnote, that mall trip was also the first time I had ever seen men in drag. There was a small group of young men wearing jewelry and a few other accoutrements which I cannot remember, but they were mugging for attention, that's for sure.

I just don't buy that one. Drag.... some young men with jewelry and something else which you can't remember, but were mugging for attention. Your 14 old brain processed wrong.
