I'm wondering if you guys know any healthier foods to make that are simple and filling. Not something that requires a ton of ingredients or confusing preparation, since I'm a little inexperienced when it comes to cooking....

See, sometimes my family will decide on getting fast food or some other fatty, unhealthy type of foods that I don't want to eat, but I end up eating anyways, because I can't make anything else. So, I'd like some help on finding healthy dishes to make. It'd be awesome if you even had the recipe or something. But again, nothing too complicated.

Hey Oscar .
1 Any pasta dish quick n easy and delicious .
2 Any rice dish if you want to make it healthier use brown rice .
3 For a really healthy diet dont forget your 5 a day this can be fruit or veg .
4 For nibbles exchange chips (crisps) for nuts .
5 If you can afford it go for organic everytime .
6 On cold days a big bowl of chunky vegetable soup .
Hope that helps buddy . ..|

And of course baked potatoes .

Hey Oscar..
Medic1 gave some good advice..

I'd skip the canned chunky soup though, go for the canned llighter soups..

Where you live I know the grocers will most likely have trout filets in the butcher dept...
The are totally boned and are delicious.. plus all you have to do is very lightly brush them with olive oil and put under the broiler for about three minutes... not too close to the heating element though..
They are great with a side of brown rice or some coleslaw.

Hell, grocers now days have fresh Alaskan salmon (please skip the Atlantic salmon as they are farm raised)... buy a filet.. just check it out for some bones..
Broil it brushed with a bit of oil or butter... grill it till it's about medium rare..
Good for you and easy to prepare.
you can buy ground turkey too... put it in a pan on the stove or grill it like a hamburger... though it's very dry so you cannot cook it for too long..
Salads are always good... use vinegar and oil for dressing or eat it dry... put avocadoes in it along with fresh tomatoes...
well that's all I have time for now mate.
I will write to you later.

I used to be in the exact same situation when I lived at home. I had a really crappy solution but the result was a reasonably healthy easy dish.

Do they sell packet pasta like side dishes where you live? I'ts as easy as getting one of them which cooks in like 10 minutes in the microwave and then fill it with peas and corn broccoli and whatever else and tuna.

Like I said pretty crappy but I love the stuff and it's easy as hell with virtually no prep.

Thanks guys for the tips!

Medic: Ahh, for some reason I thought brown rice was worse? XD

tonyboy: I actually don't really like seafood. I know, it's super healthy for you (usually), but I don't particularly love the taste of many seafood dishes....

Taz: That's a good idea. Sounds like a very quick meal. *remembers that*

Steam a LOT of veggies. It's quite simple. Chop up the veggies to bite-sized pieces. Grab a large pot, fill about half of it with cold water. Above the water, put something like a colander where you will place the veggies, but make sure that it doesn't touch the water... Make sure the water is at a rolling boil. Place the veggies and cover. Steam until they're tender. I guess 15 or 20 minutes should be good. It would be best if you checked periodically. It shouldn't take too long though.

While doing this, I like too cook some ground chicken or lean ground beef in a separate pot. You can also grab cook peeled shrimp or whatever protein you want (tofu, too!) After, mix the two...or not.

I'm a really terrible cook, but it's nice to add some stuff... Mix and match ingredients. Just have fun with it and make sure you don't burn anything.

Take whole chicken breast, rub it with salt and coarsely ground black pepper (add any other spices that you like, I like to add sweet paprika, thyme). Preheat the oven (high temperature), slice the onion and put it under and over the chicken breast. Put sliced garlic on top. Now put that into the oven. In between chop some veggies (I usually use green peppper, zucchini, aubergine) and season them with salt. Add them to the meat in the oven, and wait for it to roast. Sprinkle the veggies with bresh basil if available. It should take you about 20 minutes to prepare the whole meal.

Another idea is a salad that can be prepared very quickly. I use lettuce, radicchio, bell pepper, tomatoes, brown beans (from a can), tuna/chicken breast/turkey breast chopped into bite-size pieces, mushrooms.
For the dressing: olive oil, vinegar/lemon juice, salt, finely chopped garlic and yogurt

Roast chopped meat of your choice and mushrooms in a non-stick pan (no oil needed) at high heat, that should take you about 5 min.
Mix everything together and you are ready to eat

Almond: Mmm, that sounds good. I like that. I think it sounds very easy to prepare.

Kat: Yours sounds great, too. Very simple. I'll need to try these out soon here...
