HIV Awareness? It seems to have disappeared

I'm concerned that HIV Awareness has just about evaporated from the media. When was the last time I read about HIV or AIDS in the news? Or saw it mentioned anywhere on TV? It's been a very, very long time.

What really is scary is that teens and twenty somethings have no concept of the devastation of AIDS because they did not witness people dying, the skeletal wasting of survivors.

In some ways the HIV medications today have been a curse, in that they are taking care of HIV sufferers far better than ever and not showing the wasting, the skeletal faces and bodies. This has unfortunately given too many people and the media a false sense of "It's over."

HIV Awareness is important, people. I see personal ads online all the time and it boggles my mind how many people are looking to swallow a stranger's cum! OH BOY. I know it's not the same transmission rate of bareback sex, but still.

Another thing that bothers me is that people talk about getting "regularly tested," as if that prevents someone from catching HIV or AIDS! Sorry, but once you test positive you've already contracted the virus!

The focus needs to be on prevention! If I were out in the dating world today, I'd be scared. As it is, I fooled around with about ten guys in my single days and I recklessly did not use a condom while giving head. I never let anybody cum in my mouth but, still, there's a risk in that pre-cum carries the virus and if there's a small cut in your mouth you can catch the virus that way.

Let's not forget about AIDS and HIV!

I'm bothered that, after a good friend died in the early 90s, I didn't know a single person who contracted HIV until the past year. In the past year, I know two people who did. I find that extremely worrisome.

^ I just read the news on MSN Men's Health. This is great news!

Daily pill helps prevent HIV infection in men, study reveals

The findings are good news for men who have sex with men, the population in whom the drugs were tried. There were 43.8% fewer HIV infections among those who took Truvada, the once-a-day tablet containing two drugs, emtricitabine and tenofovir, than among those who did not. The protective effect was much greater in those who took the tablets consistently: it reduced the risk of those who took it 90% or more of the time by 72.8%.

The problem with the new pill is, as usual, cost. Especially in the US where we are constantly being gouged by the phamaceutical companies. A 30-day supply of these pills is around $1,000 according to a report on CNN.

The annual cost will be about $14,000US.

A condom costs about $1US.

True. But it could possibly save your life and your partners.

I think they should make the tests mandatory. If you think about how much it costs the government for one hiv positive person to get meds ($10,000+ per year as others have said) it would save alot of that money from drug assistance to put towards prevention.
