A compilation of cases has been presented that makes the long held arguement that the practise of prechewing food for young children (a common practice amoungst african cultures) may present a potential reisk for HIV transmission. Is it any surprise when newer tests for the disease are focusing on detectin the virus in saliva (thus making the move toward less invasive testing) that few find isolated cases such as this. I found this particularly interesting

http://www.reuters.com/article/asiaCrisis/idUSN06312845and rather thought provoking

anyother thoughts boys

HIV is present in saliva, that's a fact. But to become infected of the HIV present in saliva you would need a very large amount of saliva.
Possibly the reason why this is being said, is that people fear someone bites on his cheek or lip or something without really noticing it.

You are right...but the levels of HIV in saliva is so minute as not to be an issue unless you poured in excess of 8 litres of saliva in to an open bleed wound.

In one case, a girl, age 9 months, was diagnosed with HIV in 2004. The HIV-positive mother reported giving pre-chewed food to the child, who is still alive, receiving HIV drugs.

In a second case, a 3-year-old boy was diagnosed with HIV in 1995. The infant's mother had AIDS and had given pre-chewed food to the child, who died of AIDS in 1996.

I am not discounting what the meeting has said but my question would be if the first two cases involved HIV positive mother's then have they investigated whether the child contracted HIV during the birth process...how long had the mother's been HIV+...

Certainly, this does need further research.

Every now and then a study will come out looking at exotic forms of transmission of HIV.

It's interesting but it tends to distract us from the primary source of HIV infection: sex.

Back in early 80s, the early reports of AIDS in US were in three groups: gays, IV drug users and Haitians. There was a rather morbid joke going around at the time.

Q. What's the hardest part of telling your parents that you have AIDS?
A. Trying to convince them that you're Haitian.

The same could be said of studies like this.. "Really Mom, I got it from pre-chewed food!".
