I encountered an old bitch the day after Christmas in a local Hallmark gift shop ahead of me at the checkout. She had avvailed herself of their half-off sale, and proceeded to whine to the young gal at the register about how few "Christian" cards were in the Christmas offerings. (I have bought cards since I was a teen, and there was no lack of sacred themes if one wanted them.) Hallmark had quite a bit of Peanuts themed material and cards, and Star Wars, and Disney, but this is a booming economy in Huntsville, and there are totns of young couples with children, so little wonder at the items.

As the crone was going on about how she resented it happening HERE, in Alabama, and how she could understand it in Northern California and San Francisco, but not here. The cashier nodded in silent agreement, it seemed. As I stepped up, I couldn't resist asking the cashier, "I don't suppose you're going to point out to her your large "WICKED" display over there?"

Not being confident of being 100% heterosexual is what motivates homophobes. They are terrified that the few percentage points below 100% makes them completely gay.

In my experience, that rationale is a convenient prop for gay egos. It is a propaganda technique, creating a straightt straw man who is a liar to self about his own sexuality, thereby making him inferior on an honesty and self awareness scale to gay men.

When homophobia cannot be summarily dismissed out of hand as religious dogma, it is explained away as self-loathing, a term which has been used on JUB almost as as much as racist to beat down opposing views when reason cannot be allowed to be the medium of exchange.

Most of the homophobes I have met were black-white dichotomists who simply believed gays were deviants of the order of pedophiles, psychologically deformed. They were taught that from a variety of sources, including the military, religion, street smarts, and Freudian psychology. They don't need any interior frailty or flaw in oder to believe that. Minds that prefer concrete absolutes, like engineers, like moralists, like simple-minded men, hold onto that and it fits their world views. Add to that the unease that straight-gay interactions socially entail, beginning in adolescence, and that unease merely reinforces the intuitive prejudice in the homophobe's mind that "something is wrong with that guy."

Tension works to resolve, so you get homophobia.
