What is up with film companies, directors and all the people that think of all these supposedly scary movies? I hate when a horror movie is rated PG-13 cause then you know its not going to show anyithing AT ALL! I like when a horror movie has a good R rating with plenty of blood, guts, and gore. Maybe I am werid. If you wanna "scare" me I have to see what is going on. I have to see the people in pain for me to be scared. There are 3 movies that have recently came out...Pulse, Stay Alive and An American Hanuting. ALL were ok movies for their PG-13 rating. But with some help they all could of been ummmm ACTUALLY scary, ESPECIALLY Pulse. The concept for that movie was awesome. Kinda along the lines of White Noise (which the second one is on the way). And when you saw that coming attractions is actually looked like it was going to be scary. I like scary movies like Texas Chainsaw, Scream (all 3), Dawn of the Dead, Saw, Land of the Dead, The Desent and Hostel (even though it was not scary it had that gore factor). Thats what I wanna see more of.

Also I HATE when you can they are computer generated. It really erks me. If I can tell its fake then I am def not going to be scared.

I really do not wanna go see The Grudge 2 because the first one was simply NOT scary at all. Its only rated PG-13 soooo I am not giving my hopes up. I'll prolly wait till it goes to the $3.00 movies lol.

I know! It totally pisses me off when previews call some movie "The scariest movie in 30 years" or some bullshit, and it's got a PG-13 rating! I used to get freaked out by "scary" movies when I was younger, but now I literally want to come out of the theatre having wet myself with fear. Does it ever happen nowadays? Nope. I guess I'm just too desensitized to violence and the like. In conclusion, be better.

I love the Spice Girls!

I'm not crazy about the newer torture - oriented horror films. My 18 yr old godson and I used to sit watching Dario Argento films, remarking at the beauty of a blood stain. The artistry has gone out of horror.

Agreed. Give me an Argento movie or something from Hammer any time.

a good horror movie doesn't need blood and gore... in fact... all that does is gross you out.. a good horror movie is supposed to actually scare you... and it is completely possible to scare someone with a pg-13 rating... the problem nowadays with horror movies is they are way too manufactured... its like people are too afraid to change the recipe

what really makes me mad about horror movies nowadays are the ridiculous amounts of boobies and gross out violence (not the normal violence.. the pointless kind)... oh and people use CG WAY too much in movies nowadays.. I say go back to animatronics and make up.. looks better....

There's a difference between wanting to be shocked and grossed out and wanting to be scared, uneasy, and literally freaked out.

All of these new torture films are the former, and some of the most classic horror movies--the really good ones that stay with you, that give you that "bump in the dark" feeling--are the later.

That isn't to say that some of the former aren't classics, but most have been so duplicated now and require no thought. Examples: Cabin Fever and Hostel. They're not scary, they're just gross. But because mutilation can be horrifying, it's considered horror or scary. I'd say one of the best horror films out there that's a gorefest is 'Audition' and that had some style.

True horror requires some thought and skill. Rosemary's Baby is never a screamer, but it's those final moments when the surreal and crushing reality of Rosemary's world--filled with the insane--and what has happened to her is revealed coupled with what she finally does in the ending scene is a haunting and almost terrifying feeling.

The pale, long haired, dead girl thing may be carbon-copied to death, but the originals make a huge point and is one of the reasons why Japanese horror cinema has been so good. You never see what actually happens to the victims and you may never actually know, you only feel the paralyzing fear of never being able to escape something that does away with you in any way imaginable beyond what a normal serial killer could. Your imagination gives that fear. And what scarier thing in the dark is there than something like the Ju-On woman or Sadako?

There are just certain things that are very scary that aren't all about guts and gore.

One of the best, I think is Spoorloos (the english title is The Vanishing). Chilling, and not something I could get over in an hour like Chainsaw Massacre.

a good scary no blood or guts horror movie...try "The Changeling" and it's Canadian!

Another good Canadian horror movie....Black Christmas.

^^^^^^^^
"a good scary no blood or guts horror movie...try "The Changeling" and it's Canadian!"

I just read that they are doing a remake of that one. Its a shame, cause that one is great!!!!

The Halloween series (the first two and H2o and Resurrection) I think are great! They still freak me out! All in all, I'm bored with this "manufactured" crap they keep shoving down our throats. And this new idea of the shock value horror ( Hostel, Saw, etc.) is just lame. I want to watch a horror movie to be scared not to gross me out. Just my thoughts though.

Most of todays horror films are really just gross out films, not really scary. And i agree with you guys, even the ones that say they are scary are'nt. In order to be scary it has to have characters that are interesting, actors who can act, and a feeling that this could really happen. That's why Rosemary's Baby is scary, it destroys the sense of trust you have in what seem like nice, ordinary people. You can't trust anyone again, even the sweet old lady next door. And the way that movie ends in such a demented fashion, with the child's lullabye playing, always sends a chill up my spine. Another great horror film is Dario Argento's "Suspiria". Too bizarre, and yet very realistic. There is plenty of gore, but that's beside the point. The way the murders are carried out is so brutal, yet it's so well done that you can tell it was done by somone who was a master with lighting and sets. The characters are creepy as hell, and the music alone is the most disturbing i have ever heard. Any Blockbuster should have it, well worth the trip.

I love the suspence in The Sixth Sense and The Others.

Wanna see a real horror? Watch Paris Hilton trying to act.

Thanks for the diversity in answers. I still think all the gore is scary to me. I cant be scared if I cant see whats going on. I've seen rosemarys baby and I was kinda bored. And cabin fever scared me lol. To think something like that could actually happen sends chills down my spine.

It seems like the only horror films to come out in the last 5 years have been either Japanese remakes, American remakes, or torture flicks. I miss the good old "superhuman killer stalking teenagers" movies of the 80s.

Right now, I'm looking forward to Rob Zombie's semi-remake of Halloween that's due to come out next year.

I love the suspence in The Sixth Sense and The Others.

I second that. Though I do every once in a while want to see a little blood & gore, my favorite kind of "horror" movies are the ones with intelligent suspense and a great story to spook the shit out of you. I still get the creeps watching Rosemary's Baby.

Totally waiting for the Halloween remake!!!

And I totally agree jlukes19! I want to see more slasher flicks like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Urban Legend.

scary movies nowadays are not meant to scare you... they are meant to startle you and get your adrenilane going... i personally hate the scary movies nowadays (though working at blockbuster still rent them for fun and cute guys) but thats because i actually think... i want something that is going to make it hard for me to sleep tonight... something that makes me go "holy shit" and be up till 3 wondering who is gonna sneak in through my bedroom window... so far the only ones like that may be saw... the rest suck imo....
while i do love dawn of the dead thats because i like well made zombie movies... so theres very few movies nowa days that scare me... and noone really makes psychological thrillers which is the type i love...

When I watched the remake Amityville Horror, I had to sleep with the lights on for, I think, three nights. Meanwhile I watched The Exorcist and just went to sleep without a second thought.

I actually like cabin fever, mostly because of rider strong.

I definitely like R rated horror more than pg-13. more everything

I love the Saw movies, and I can't wait for the third one to come out this Halowe'en! I, too, am a fan of great psychological thrillers!

I think sometimes people still think of the first time they were introduced to Jason. And Freddy Kruger. Classic terrifier.

But I have to give it to The Descent. I remember catching it in the cinema, sitting around the girls. When the video cam caught the first look at the creature, we jumped and some screamed. That was some serious shit.

Remember Poltergeist? I still can't get over the fact that it was shown the kid with a horrifying looking clown sitting there in the bedroom, like watching the kid sleeping. The kid had to throw his jacket to cover the evil looking clown's face. If I were the kid, I would sue the parents for buying such clown to frighten the shit out of my night life.

i dont see how a truly scary movie can just be a PG-13 i mean honestly. you know it's going to be tame if it's only a PG-13.

i agree with you. i think these torture things are not horror, but...some other type of movie. horror is supposed to scare you not make you sick. the last movie that un-nerved me and was horror was event horizon. that might partly be because a bunch of friends of mine went thinking it was just a regular sci fi and it turned out to be freakishly scary. the move Seven i think sorta started this whole new genre of torture kinda movie. that was just a terribly upsetting movie.
