How can I lower my voice?

For all my life my voice has been pretty high. On the phone I'm always mistaken for a girl, and people who see me just assume I'm gay.

What is the best way to do this? I did a google search, and it seems like if I increase my testosterone it could help it out. I've also heard in the past that there are surgeries that can be done, but I would rather try to do it naturally.

Any help would be appricated.

Testosterone will only lower your voice if your testosterone level is low and only to the extent that your larynx would have grown if you had a normal testosterone level. You can ask your physician to run a blood test to check your male hormone levels.

But what you're asking for is also a change in your speech pattern- a process called "voice masculinization". If you live in an urban area, you can work with a vocal coach or a speech therapist to help learn to speak in the lower range of your voice and to project a more masculine timbre when you speak.

KaraBulut's advice is sound, and I'm quite impressed. My voice is just naturally deep, and I was even told at the ripe old age of 13 that I had an "old man voice." I can't sing worth a dime, and even my 3rd grade teacher asked me to just lip synch during our Christmas lycium. Ha ha, after viewing a few family home movies, I understood why.

Some tones and inflections are just innate, and you'll have to make a conscious effort to moderate them. I just feel that a continual and constant ever vigilance is not the answer. I still sing much to the dismay and dislike of others, but I'm not singing for them. Perhaps you could get an elective trachea and ask for an electrolarynx, but I hope you'd just accept yourself before that doing something that drastic.

Look at Chris Colfer; he's made a career out of his natural voice.

I think the question you should be asking yourself is, "how can I learn to love myself for who I am." I think the time and energy you'll spend on changing your voice won't be worth it in the end. You really need to dig deep and figure out why your voice bothers you so much. I see your profile says you're "curious", so i take it you're not exactly out and probably not 100% comfortable with your sexuality. Having a high pitched voice probably doesn't help in hiding who you are, but wouldn't it be much better for you if you accepted yourself for who you are, starting with your voice?

I know you wrote this post to get advice on how to, but I think you really should work out the issues you have with loving who you are. There are plenty of successful men out there with high pitched voices, you just have to be comfortable with it, example Ross Mathews!

.
maybe self taught to lower your voice.
Speak slower and lower i guess.

KaraBulut is right. If a voice coach worked for Margaret Thatcher, one could work for you.

KaraBulut is right that part of your problem is the pattern of speech. If you cannot afford a coach, i suggest you choose a "model", some one with a moderate voice, not too macho. Mark Walberg perhaps. Choose one of his videos. Write down his dialoge, then watch the video repeatedly and repeat his speeches, trying to duplicate his speech pattern.
Consciously work to eliminate gay sterortypical words and patterns. Words like fabulous etc Notice the words you are using.
I am trying to be constructive so please don't take offense.

you can probably find vocal exercises online for free, a lot exist for people going through gender change surgery to help raise or lower their voices accordingly. Like most people above me here I think the first thing would be to stop and think about your voice, do you really not like it or do you just not like peoples reaction to it? if its more about other people then thats their damn problem! people shouldnt assume they know shit about a person based on how they look/act/sound.
however Benvolio's suggestion is a good start, spend a little time on your own each day somewhere quiet and repeat a few phrases in the tone of voice you want to speak in..."this is how I want to sound today" etc...think of words you say that you think might sound the most high pitched or 'camp' and work on trying to change those specific words and your voice should start to naturally 'fall in line'

I am not seeing an age range on you so maybe if your young it might change by itself in a few years. Be patient, dont expect miracles and tell everyone else to take their unwanted/misjudged opinions of you, the way you sound and who you may/may not be and get fucked! :-)

Smoke. It's lowered mine. But just kidding, for real don't smoke.
When I have to talk a lot, my voice gets all crackly. Green tea has always worked wonders on it. Not the crap you buy in bottles.. try the hot, fresh-brewed-from-tea-bags kinda tea.

I'm sorry for not posting back. I posted this during a very busy few weeks for myself.

Thanks for all the replies! Hopefully, I can answer some questions posted here.

I am 24 years old, and honestly, I have never liked my voice. I remember being 5, and having my voice recorded, and just hating how it sounded. I was actually shocked by how high it was. Even to this day (to myself) my voice doesn't sound as high as it actually is. Peoples comments are just icing on the cake. Though, since the age of 8 (maybe even earlier) I've been called mam on the telephone. Then in high school people just assumed I was gay.

I've tried talking in a lower tone, but I found myself sounding really slow. Like, I'm thinking about every word that comes out of my mouth. Though, I do like the idea of finding a male voice, and just listening to it over and over. When I was younger I always was around girls more than boys. I'm starting to think I picked up vocal patterns/tones from that. I always wondered if I was around more males if I would lower my tone. Al most like going someplace, and picking up an accent.

Another reason I want to change my voice is because, it doesn't feel like it's me. I look in the mirror, and see myself, and deep down I just don't think the voice matches who I see. I know people I meet sometimes look at me, and are amazed by my voice. My physical appearance doesn't match my voice at all. It's hard to explain, but I have this vision of what I am, and everything. The voice just doesn't match it. At all.
