I don´t hear anybody saying they Linux and are actually enjoying it.
Does it mean it is not a nice OS?

I use linux. I specifically use Knoppix (which is called a linux distribution, like Ubuntu and others). I think t-rex is still a big user of linux, but i know he's been real busy as of late.

there might just be a lull in linux news lately. i've been waiting all summer for Knoppix version 5.2 to come out, but it's been delayed.

I tried it. I'm just too stupid. I have to stick with Windoze.

No one that I know of is frightened of Linux. Certain Linux users used multiple threads to constantly harangue Windows users and spread falsehoods about Windows and Microsoft until it degenerated into one Linux user telling Windows users that they were lesser humans and were being denied their full potential to become full humans as long as they were using Windows whereas Linux users were more enlightened.

Any behaviour and outbursts like that will not be left unchallenged and will be corrected ad nauseum.

In response to the OP - there are many Jubbers using Linux but most Linux users tend to be a lot more tech savvy and know how to fix their own issues when they arise. There were several threads here at the last release of Ubuntu where many Jubbers experimented with Linux and got a lot of support and some stayed with it.

Yeah, I hate it when Linux users try to tout their holier-than-thou-ness.

There are quite a number of software packages that simply don't exist on Linux that many users need, especially at work. Pro|Engineer, a 3D CAD package began on Unix, but the latest release is the LAST release that includes Linux. SolidWorks, one of Pro|E's competitors, began on Windows, and only exists on Windows.

I consider myself very tech-savvy, though I don't exactly like the idea of debugging my OS or getting into it and changing a lot of stuff. For me, WinXP really does the job very very well.

I use Puppy Linux on my laptop booted from a memory stick, it works well and runs completely in ram and so is very fast. It is much more limited than windows of course but I cant break it. Because even if I corrupt it by playing I have the whole thing backed up to another stick. I use Skype, FireFox and Gaim messenger for internet stuff. The wireless card is recognised. I recomend it to give old computers, say running win 98, a new lease of life.

This thread got me interested in Linux again... This weekend I will setup a Linux box from an old desktop PC I have.

Question: Which flavor of Linux is suggested? I will install to HD

ASUS TUSL2-C motherboard
PIII 1000
500MB 133 Ram
30gig HD 7200rpm
ATI 7500 Vid Card
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card

T-Rexx, many thanks for the informative posts! Again, thanks for taking the time to help.

I've been using Linux exclusively for years now, ever since kernel version 0.99, and slackware which came on lots of floppy disks. Currently I'm running Suse 10.0 on a desktop and Suse 9.3 on a laptop, and I'm happy with both. Probably if I was installing from scratch I'd think about Ubuntu. Linux suits me and my computing needs perfectly; no other OS provides such a good match.

Ubuntu 7.10 ("Gutsy Gibbon") is due out October 18. The best news is that Compiz-Fusion (the new name for the "Beryl" 3D graphical interface) is now included as part of the standard ubuntu package! (Canonical had always refused to include it before on the grounds that it wasn't yet stable enough). Firefox 3 will be included. Also, Linux is no longer beholden to Adobe's spastic release schedules for Flash Player for Linux. The open-source alternative, Gnash , is now ready and will be included with ubuntu 7.10.

Here is an alpha of ubuntu 7.10 (sorry, I don't know the hardware specs):

that actually doesn't look half bad. the last time I tried installing linux some years ago, I temporarily lost the use of my screen, soundcard, etc...

The current box is an EMachines from this year, do you think a "live CD" would do the trick to test it out?

also, in terms of developement, can linux run things like textpad, xampp, frontpage,etc..?

in my intro to computers class in college, we played around with linux (specifically knoppix) and I loved it. Reckon it sucks running an OS off of a CD but still great to have. It can be a real life saver if your computer crashes and you need to rescue some files. However, my college is a tight control on our usage for computers and they require windows. We do have a Mac lab but all our laptops must be windows based which sucks but it makes it simple for us. Not to mention free tech support :).

oh yeah forgot this. Knoppix penguin is super sexy.

Thanks for the information, but I was wondering if there was some way to simply run windows apps in linux, maybe through the use of an emulator? I really like textpad :p

i'm a linux user too.

some food for thought here: one of the big reasons i left debian for ubuntu was because of ubuntu's super easy beryl installation. i had vista home premium installed on my laptop with full 3D support, but it couldn't do the same eye candy stuff beryl on ubuntu could do on the same laptop w/o 3D support. go figure.

don't so much matter any more now, though, because i got tired of all the eye candy and removed beryl.

oh yeah, in the interest of trying to be neutral: since i said something that can be taken in a pejorative context about windows, i'll say this:

i noticed that my laptop runs about two degrees cooler when running vista as opposed to ubuntu.

lol, I accidentally downloaded and burned the server edition cd...
so I just finished downloading and burning the desktop cd and running from it right now. I'll be back...:p

*raises hand* I got another question, is there any way in hell I can install without backing up evvverrrrryyyyyything I have? Cuz that's like, 20 cd's right there I'll have to buy, and half a day or more backing shit up. Im seriously tempted in getting an external hard drive so that I can screw around with my hdd partitions freely.

BTw... so far I like it, was able to play my movies, found a decent little editor w/ syntax highlighting (like my precious textpad), gaim does what it's supposed to, and so far I haven't verbally abused the computer :)

Oh, and I can't seem to find apache, php, mysql...I imagine if i just get xamp for linux that should solve my problems?

Yeah, this morning I decided to install. Let's face it, it's been a long time since ive been able to watch a movie from my PC without all sorts of interference and gremlins on the screen...heck...the picture stays intact when I adjusts the brightness...that was an unforeseen surprise :D And it seems like the player that comes with ubuntu plays ALL my video files... no more VLC, WMP, and KLite classic media player...I had all three loaded on my computer! lol...As for music...well...I havent been able to play music on XP for awhile now, both winamp and WMP keeps crashing after a few tunes, so that'll be a nice change too...playing music without restarting the player every fifteen minutes...wow.

perhaps I won't need anger management after all :p

so this is how far ive gotten: I went out this morning to buy a 160gig Maxtor external HDD so that I could backup my data to it, alas, I forgot it's labour day weekend...arg! (the number of christmasses that I've worked and the bloody stores can't even stay open on labour day?!...) So I came home frustrated thinking I was gonna have to use ALL my blanks to backup my data. THEN, i remembered that I gutted my last computer for parts before throwing it out, so I searched for my old 14gig hard drive, found it, installed it, formatted it to FAT32 and am presently backing up as much as I can to it...although I must admit, I have 24 gigs in music, movies, porn, pictures, etc... so I have to shave off 10 gigs somewhere...
Im planning on formatting C and installing just Ubuntu...if ever I need XP, i have to CD...I could always install it on the spare drive I just installed...but I really don't think Ill need XP..

I'll keep y'all posted on my install progress...

I'm writing this post from Puppy Linux (Live CD) and what can I say but WOW!

The speed is unreal and it set up the graphics and audio by itself and the network connection took two or three clicks and it came with a firewall that also took only two clicks. The speed of web browsing is crazy fast. It's amazing.

Hey It's good to see you gave it a go. It will also install and boot from a pen drive in 40 secs. But you may have seen the vid I did of that. I use Skype, Firefox and Gaim on it. The speed is great as it installs to ram but I believe it can burn its settings file to the CD if it is a multi session one.
