How common is it for Facebook to ask for picture ID?

I'm part of a not-for-profit group which made a Facebook page. The site says the account is locked because it doesn't recognize the device I'm using to access it (though it's the only device EVER used to access it). When I followed the instructions to get in, all it did was restate that the account was locked -- and I got an email saying they need a picture ID in order to unlock the account.

Is that common?

And even if it is, what good does it do? They don't have any ID from any of us now, so even if we send something, they have no way of knowing if it's from someone who 'owns' the account. Somehow this smells of a scam to me.

Seems to be generating quite the controversy (and rightly so!). The Reddit link it links to is worth reading as well. "Quit Facebook" is the typical response; for your non-profit group it's a bit different than being an individual, and I recognize Facebook is a central site many people interested in checking out what your group does might go, but some non-profits have been able to avoid Facebook altogether by setting up their own domain.

Not sure but it could be because your page represents a group, charity. Makes sense to me if that's the reason. Imagine if I now create the same page for bogus reasons.

I remember that they had this option in order to get a password from an account it needed you to identify people on your friend's list using pictures they posted. But I assume it's not that issue you are dealing with at the moment. Facebook has you do weird shit in order to get stuff that you might be trying to gain access to.

We went with Facebook because people kept asking for our Facebook page.

We'll probably ditch it as soon as we can find someone who will provide a free web site.

All I want to do is post an update on activities.

What I really don't get is what good a picture ID is going to do them. They don't have any pictures of me. And for that matter, we don't even know if we used a real name to sign up.

But the reason given is that they don't "recognize" my "device". My computer is the only one any of us has used to log in!

If i were paranoid, I'd think it was some NSA plot to collect info on you and our group.

Did you know I-9's now ask for a phone number and e-mail address ?

I got one of those when I created a Facebook page for an individual using my own computer. I assumed that their system detected that my own Facebook page was created with the same computer and that their system thought I was creating a second FB page for myself...which violates their terms of service. The account you are trying to access, is it a personal account or a business/group type of page? You wouldn't want a personal type of account for your non-profit.

It's a group, not a business, not a corporation, not an individual. But they insist that every page have a specific person tied to it -- and part of the problem is that we don't even remember who made the account in the first place, or whether we used a real person or not.

I'm torn over whether to even give FB the time of day any longer. We don't have a consensus yet, but I suspect we're just going to find someone tom provide us a free web page, and just do that.

I've had a free web page once, Let me look through this mess I call a PC and see if I can find a link.

Again, Sorry. After reading the service agreement the site will be free for a year then 37.00 to register. Kinda looks like there ain't any.

How easy is it to move a web site from one host to another? If it's simple, I could get a free year and have a year to find a permanent free host.

If the hosting service allows FTP, then physically moving the site is easy...the hard part is updating links to the new URL - from other sites/in google searches/etc

How many 'pages' would be in the site?
You could always register a domain for the group (which is a good idea anyway)...its not all that expensive.
If you use something like GoDaddy they also give a small web-space as part of an account
(plus they frequently have discount coupons for the domain-registration fee)

I stopped reading the agreement when I saw the registration fee. I don't know if there are small print that says you agree to some more years at 37$.

I have never had that issue but my mom did with her Facebook and had to confirm her account via her cell phone, and we had never had that issue on the laptop before, as it's the only other thing she accessed her Facebook account on. I think Facebook is fucking with us sometimes.

That's kind of what one guy, whose job is web site security, said. His position is that zapping a copy of your photo ID across the internet is a Very Bad Thing, something that could be dangerous to you. So that's what I told Facebook -- I haven't gotten any reply since.

I don't know if what you said is the case here, however I would not rule it out.

One thing people have to understand is, there is an initiative to positively identify every user on the Internet. If certain people have their way, there will come a day when you will not even be able to get on the Internet without positively identifying yourself..most likely through a biometrics..iris, retina, DNA, etc..

If you stop and think about it, this is being done incrementally.. You cannot even sign up for a new email address without a mobile number. You can all laugh, but the global surveillance control grid is being built all around you, the day is coming when you will not be able to do, or say anything without "someone" knowing about it.. A complete a total loss of liberty and freedoms all in the name of security what a joke!

I have a FB account, but never use it..they can go f*ck themselves..
