to the best of my knowledge you can not just uninstall windows, if that is the only operating system on the computer (or only version of windows that has ever been on the computer. like if you had upgraded to windows XP from windows 98). in the case i just mentioned you might be able to uninstall xp and go back to windows 98. But if you didn't upgrade and there isn't another operating system on the computer, the computer will not work if you attempt to remove windows (unless you install another operating system afterwards). if you have another operating system you wish to use, you will likely have to reformat the computer (which means erase the entire hard drive so there is nothing on it) and then install the operating system you are wanting to use. are you sure that what ever operating system you want to use will work on the new computer? do you have the back up installation CDs to the new computer just in case this all doesn't work?

out of curiosity what operating system are you wanting to use?

Well it's all been laid out for you already myers, but i'll just add my voice to the chorus. You can't just uninstall windows ;). Your computer has to have an OS to work, and there's no way of removing windows and keeping other miscellaneous files, your computer just won't work. If you want to use a different OS on your computer u'll have to format it (erase everything) and install the new OS.

hum...i wonder if he knows his thread was moved and how to find it? it's fairly new...hope he got the PM or whatever saying his thread had been moved.

edit: ok i sent him a PM. maybe he'll get it ;)

Hey may have already tried to "remove windows"... Hope he didn't just highlight the windows DIR and keep pressing "delete".

If you're using Linux and you want to remove Windows, you don't necessarily have to erase the hard disk. You can use a tool such as GNU Parted (qtparted, gparted) to remove the Windows partition and create one or more Linux partitions so that the Linux system can use the freed space.

our own Miaplacidus, for example, cannot get sound for his laptop in Linux, because no Linux drivers exist for his laptop's sound card.

Glad to see that you remember me, T-Rexx. I abandoned Ubuntu; I'm trying openSUSE 10.2 now. It seems to be much better. But still no sound...

This guy hasn't posted since his first message. :( sure hope he's not without a computer now... i don't see under people's profiles anymore when they were last on...
