just wondering if any of you know how many illegally downloaders there are in the u.s. compared to people who buy music legally online and also compared to people who buy music in stores.

I either download from ITunes or I go to our local library----they have hundreds of cds---I even look around at the used book store by my apartment some. They have great deals on used cd's---

i get mines both illegally and cds i buy cds from artist i know i like and download when i have one or two songs that i like form some random artist

"Illegally" download (we payd a cannon of cd, hd, mp3...) Other way i buy more cds than ever, go to concert...

I use Rhapsody, for anything I can't find there I head to iTunes. All legal here...

I used to buy everything. Now I buy nothing. In the last 2 years I think I've bought 3 cds. Best of Bjork. An album from Sting cuz I'm obsessed with him. And a CD from some obscure duo called Nox Arcana- only because I couldn't get it illegally =)

mostly legal downloads most also illegal. very rarely do I buy cd's anymore.

Yes so the forum crawling feds can accurately determine how many, from where, age range and how prevalent to arrest us all. You aren't a fed are you coolguy?

from amazon. com for the most part. I buy a few songs through Itunes but the majority come from online purchases.

All of my music now is legal. Mp3s come mainly from Emusic.com because they carry a lot of the music I like. I can get albums for around $3 which is a fair price. iTunes and most of Amazon albums are a RIP OFF as an mp3 is a compressed file about 10 times less than what is on an actual album. So why pay $9.99 for an mp3 album when you can get it for the same price at a place like Target? Better to own an actual hard copy and rip it yourself with LAME codec at your own bitrate.

Many labels have gotten way too greedy with the prices of mp3s. :grrr:

Currently listening to Basia Bulat - Oh, My Darling.

I download. If I like it, I'll try to buy it, if I really like it, I'll hunt the CD down.

I download them off mp3 blogs I can find on a good aggregator. I hate to sound like a rock snob, but for most of my music, the artists themselves are obscure enough to put their own fare out for free download. The way it works out anyway is if I like it well enough, I'll be more than willing to pay them back by getting their CD or going to a concert...

Then, there's my favorite way - people send me their music, either a digital or physical copy, for review or at least a mention. They mark off the bar codes so I can never get rid of the ones I don't want - again mostly indie stuff, and they're very charitable people...
